Google Loses Top Researchers to Meta and Microsoft

Google DeepMind has become a prime target in the ongoing battle for top talent. The company has recently lost around 23 key AI researchers to Meta and Microsoft, as both prepare to scale their AI efforts.
Details:
Meta Platforms has hired Tianhe Yu, Cosmo Du, and Weiyue Wang—three AI researchers from Google DeepMind who worked on a version of Google’s Gemini model, which was recently recognized for achieving gold-level performance in this year’s International Math Olympiad.
The Financial Times also reported that Microsoft has poached more than 20 employees from Google DeepMind over the past six months. Among them are Amar Subramanya, the former head of engineering for Google’s Gemini chatbot, and Adam Sadovsky, who spent 18 years at Google.
Microsoft’s new recruits are joining its AI group led by Mustafa Suleyman, who reports directly to CEO Satya Nadella.
Suleyman, a co-founder of DeepMind, appears especially motivated to bring over talent from his former company, where he spent several years. Meanwhile, Meta is also aggressively hiring AI talent from across the industry—including researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI. With these latest additions, Meta has now hired at least six researchers from Google DeepMind.

Amazon Buys AI Wearable That Listens to Everything You Say

Amazon has announced its acquisition of Bee, a startup known for its AI-powered wearable device that listens to conversations and provides personalized insights.
Details:
Bee’s $49.99 wearable device uses AI to transcribe conversations and generate summaries, reminders, and suggestions through its app.
Users can allow the device to access emails, contacts, location, and more to create a searchable history of their activities.
Bee has a policy against storing audio, and Amazon assures customers that privacy and security will remain a priority.
Bee CEO Maria de Lourdes Zollo said on LinkedIn that the company is joining Amazon to help “bring truly personal, agentic AI to even more customers.” While the terms of the acquisition haven’t been disclosed, all Bee employees have reportedly received offers to join Amazon.

This update reintroduces AI-powered notification summaries for news, after the feature was paused earlier this year for repeatedly sending users error-filled headlines, which prompted backlash from a news organization and press freedom groups.
After Sam Altman announced plans to run well over 1 million GPUs by the end of this year, Elon Musk tweeted that xAI is aiming for compute power equivalent to 50 million Nvidia H100 GPUs within five years.
Google's “fastest and most cost-efficient” ($0.10 input per 1M, $0.40 output per 1M) Gemini model is now stable and generally available, following a month-long preview.
The move was part of efforts to help Grok better understand human emotions, according to a report from Business Insider. As part of the process, xAI reportedly had employees sign a form granting the company rights to their “likeness” for training purposes and for use in the “promotion of commercial products and services.”
