Google Takes Gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2025

The DeepMind IMO team at this year's event in Australia
Google DeepMind’s Gemini has achieved gold medal–level performance at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), earning recognition as the first AI system to receive official gold-level grading from competition organizers.
Details:
An advanced version of Gemini Deep Think managed to solve five of six exceptionally difficult problems, achieving 35 out of a possible 42 points and comfortably exceeding the gold medal threshold in the IMO, the world’s most prestigious competition for young mathematicians.
The system completed its work following all competition rules and within the standard 4.5-hour time limit, operating end-to-end in natural language and producing rigorous mathematical proofs directly from the official problem descriptions.
The model’s results were officially graded and certified by IMO coordinators using the same criteria applied to student solutions.
The company also took a subtle jab at OpenAI, saying they held off announcing the feat on Friday out of respect for the IMO Board’s request that AI labs wait to share results until "after the official results had been verified by independent experts and the students had rightly received the acclamation they deserved"
Google plans to make this version of the Deep Think model available to a set of trusted testers, including mathematicians, before rolling it out to Google AI Ultra subscribers soon.

OPENAI
Instacart CEO Fidji Simo Joins OpenAI to Lead Applications

Starting August 18th, Fidji Simo will serve as the “CEO of Applications,” overseeing a significant portion of the company’s operations and reporting directly to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Details:
Simo’s position as “CEO of Applications” is part of OpenAI’s reorganization, allowing Sam Altman to focus more on research and safety systems.
Simo will focus on product growth, with particular interest in AI’s potential for real-world use cases like healthcare, personalized tutoring, career coaching, and creative tools.
Simo sent her first memo to staff on Monday, where she emphasized the importance of ensuring AI benefits everyone, rather “than concentrating wealth and power among a few.”
Simo first joined OpenAI’s board in March 2024, coinciding with the same time as CEO Sam Altman regained his board seat, and aside from previously working as the CEO of Instacart, she also spent a decade at Meta, where she went from being a product manager on the company’s news feed to the head of product for the Facebook app.

How to create daily, weekly, or monthly tasks on ChatGPT

Go to ChatGPT.
Change the model to o3.
Ask it to create a daily, weekly, or monthly task for you — for example:
"Create a daily task to do the following: Every day at 8 AM, use web Browse to find the top 5 news stories from the past 24 hours in [your country]. Prioritize the most unusual, viral, or controversial developments with major social or political relevance.
Provide a bullet list with:
A concise headline
A brief summary explaining what makes it interesting or impactful
A link to the source
Include only credible sources and indicate if the story is speculative or trending"
ChatGPT will then create an automated task for you.
To check your created tasks, click on your name or profile picture, and select Tasks.

You’ll be able to see all the automated tasks you’ve created. Hover over each one to click Edit and change the details or timing. You can also pause or delete each task.
ChatGPT will send you an email each time a task is completed, including a link to view the results.

About 330 million of those come from users in the U.S. While the numbers are still far behind Google, ChatGPT’s rapid growth still poses a major threat to the search giant.
The company has been testing it in private beta over the past few weeks, and it’s now opening early access.
The privacy-focused Google Chrome alternative has rolled out a new feature that lets you hide AI-generated images from your search results, although the company admits it “won’t catch 100% of AI-generated results,” it promises to greatly reduce the number.
Although Grok's new “AI companions” helped boost downloads, it's Grok 4 that's actually driving revenue. The app's iOS gross income surged 325%—from $99,000 to $419,000—the day after Grok 4 launched.
That’s a wrap!
