Welcome to another edition of Horizon AI,

Most coding assistants focus on snippets. Real engineering work needs context, explanations, and safe changes you can trust. In today’s issue, we’re looking at an AI coding partner built directly into the IDE, one that understands your full codebase, explains every change, and helps you refactor and improve code without losing control.

Let’s jump into it!

Nvidia Unveils Vera Rubin, a New AI Computing Platform Built for the Next Wave of Models

Nvidia has announced its next-generation AI computing platform, Vera Rubin, at CES 2026, positioning it as a major leap beyond Blackwell as demand for large-scale AI training continues to surge.

Details:

  • The new Vera Rubin computing platform is made up of six tightly integrated chips, including the Vera CPU, Rubin GPU, NVLink 6 switch, BlueField-4 DPU, ConnectX-9 networking, and Spectrum-X optical interconnect.

  • Nvidia says the Rubin GPU delivers up to five times more AI training compute power than Blackwell, while the full platform can train large mixture-of-experts models using one-quarter of the GPUs and roughly one-seventh the token cost.

  • The platform supports 3rd-generation confidential computing and, according to the company, will be the first rack-scale trusted computing platform.

  • Vera Rubin launched earlier than expected, just months after Nvidia reported record data center revenue driven by Blackwell and Blackwell Ultra demand.

  • Products based on the Vera Rubin platform will be available through Nvidia’s partners starting in the second half of 2026.

The early debut signals Nvidia’s confidence that AI infrastructure demand will keep accelerating, as the company raises the performance bar again for training and deploying the next generation of large AI models.

Google DeepMind and Boston Dynamics Partner to Bring a New Era of AI to Humanoid Robots

Google DeepMind is partnering with Boston Dynamics to integrate its Gemini AI models into humanoid robots, marking a major step toward AI-driven machines performing real-world industrial work.

Details:

  • Google’s Gemini Robotics model will be deployed on Boston Dynamics robots, including the humanoid Atlas and the four-legged Spot, to give them contextual awareness, decision-making ability, and object manipulation skills.

  • The companies plan to test Gemini-powered Atlas robots inside Hyundai auto factories, offering an early glimpse of humanoid robots operating in real manufacturing environments rather than controlled demos.

  • Atlas already shows impressive physical abilities like balance and acrobatics, but Gemini is meant to address its biggest limitation: understanding unfamiliar environments and handling new objects intelligently.

  • Google DeepMind sees robotics as essential for advancing AI’s understanding of the physical world, with Gemini designed as a multimodal system that can learn from vision, movement, and real-world interaction.

  • Safety remains a major focus, with Gemini adding reasoning layers on top of Boston Dynamics’ existing controls to prevent dangerous behavior as AI takes on physical tasks.

The collaboration reflects a broader push across the AI industry to move models out of screens and into the real world, starting with factories where structured environments make large-scale deployment more feasible.

Use this Coding Partner to Write Better Code Faster

Junie by JetBrains is a coding agent built directly into JetBrains IDEs, designed to help developers handle real engineering work with clarity and control.

Here’s how it works in practice:

  1. Understands Your Project

Junie scans your entire codebase, not just the file you’re looking at. It builds context before making any suggestion.

  2. Explains Every Change

Instead of dropping code blindly, Junie shows its reasoning so you can review decisions like you would with a teammate.

  3. Refactors Safely

From loop extractions to naming improvements, Junie updates your code with small, reliable steps you can verify instantly.

  4. Improves Reliability

It adds defensive logic, handles edge cases, and tightens structure without altering behavior.

  5. Supports Real Workflows

Branches, diffs, task logs, and multi-step actions happen directly inside the IDE.

It’s a practical and transparent way to elevate any project.

Jerry Tworek, a senior OpenAI researcher, is leaving the company after nearly seven years. He played a major role in GPT-4, ChatGPT, early AI coding models, and led the Reasoning Models team behind o1 and o3. Tworek said he wants to explore research that’s hard to do at OpenAI, hinting at growing tension between research goals and product pressure.

At CES 2026, Nvidia introduced Alpamayo, an open-source family of AI models, datasets, and simulation tools designed to help autonomous vehicles reason through complex, real-world driving scenarios.

The core model, Alpamayo 1, is a 10B-parameter vision-language-action system that breaks problems into steps, explains its decisions knowing why it chose a specific action, and handles rare edge cases like traffic light outages.

The company is delaying the international launch of its Ray-Ban Display glasses due to limited inventory and unexpectedly high demand in the U.S., with waitlists now stretching into 2026. Planned launches in the U.K., France, Italy, and Canada have been paused to focus on fulfilling U.S. orders.

An AI system called PANDA, developed by Alibaba researchers, is spotting pancreatic cancer in standard non-contrast CT scans that often miss early tumors. Trained using annotated contrast-enhanced scans from over 2,000 patients, the model learned to identify cancer signs in lower-detail images.

The FDA has granted the tool “Breakthrough Device” status, though experts warn about false positives and unnecessary follow-ups, while still seeing value as a safety net in hospitals with limited specialist expertise.

Only about five percent of ChatGPT’s roughly 900 million weekly users have a paid subscription, and most users live outside the USA and Canada, where ad revenue is much lower.

According to reported data, countries like India and Brazil are among the largest markets, but they generate far less revenue per user than the US. OpenAI is betting on advertising to reach about $110 billion from free users by 2030.
