Elon Musk's AI Company Loses Half Its Founders
xAI is experiencing a wave of high-level departures in recent days, including multiple co-founders, marking one of the company's most significant leadership shakeups since its launch in 2023.

Jimmy Ba announced his departure on Tuesday in a post on X, just one day after fellow co-founder Tony Wu announced his own exit. Both publicly thanked Musk and described their time at the company positively while signaling a move to new projects.
With Ba's exit, half of the original 12 co-founders are now gone. Five of those exits occurred within the past year alone, including Christian Szegedy, Igor Babuschkin, and Greg Yang, who departed last month for health-related reasons.
Other technical staff members also announced their exits in recent weeks, citing reasons ranging from pursuing new ventures and creative work to taking time off or seeking different directions in AI development, including Simon Zhai, Shayan Salehian, Ayush Jaiswal, Vahid Kazemi, and Hang Gao.
The exits span multiple product and research areas, with some departing employees having worked on core xAI efforts such as Grok models, reasoning research, and video generation tools.
The frequency of these exits is certainly raising eyebrows, with the exact reasons remaining unclear. They also come shortly after Musk revealed plans to merge xAI with SpaceX, a move he said would support large-scale AI infrastructure ambitions.

Anthropic AI Safety Engineer Resigns, Says World Is Falling Apart and Is in Peril
An Anthropic researcher who led a key AI safety team has left the company, publishing a resignation letter warning of a world “in peril” and suggesting growing tension between values and real world pressures inside advanced AI development.

Mrinank Sharma, who headed Anthropic’s safeguards research team, shared a public resignation letter that quickly drew widespread attention online. In it, he said the moment had come to step away, describing a broader global crisis environment that extends beyond AI alone.
Sharma wrote that he has "repeatedly seen how hard it is to truly let our values govern our actions" while at Anthropic, adding, "we constantly face pressures to set aside what matters most," though he did not provide specific examples.
During his time at Anthropic, Sharma worked on reducing risks tied to advanced AI systems, including defenses against AI-assisted bioterrorism and research into AI sycophancy.
A recent study he authored examined how chatbot interactions can distort users’ perception of reality. While severe cases were rare, he reported that milder distortions occur frequently, particularly in areas like relationships and wellness.
Sharma’s departure follows a pattern of high profile exits across major AI labs where researchers have raised ethical or governance concerns, reflecting ongoing tension in the industry over safety, transparency, and priorities.
