AI GLOBAL RACE
U.S. Releases AI Action Plan to Dominate AI Race

President Trump has rolled out his administration’s America’s AI Action Plan a 28-page blueprint aimed at making the United States a global leader in artificial intelligence. The plan focuses on speeding up AI innovation, building the infrastructure needed to support it, and strengthening international partnerships to secure America’s position in the AI race.
Details:
AI Everywhere: The plan encourages widespread adoption of AI across industries, including aggressive use within the Armed Forces and government operations.
It proposes removing state and federal regulations that could slow AI development, including rules around data centers and semiconductor manufacturing.
A focus on retraining workers to adapt to an AI-driven economy is central to the plan, which also calls for developers to “ensure that their systems are objective and free from top-down ideological bias.”
While the administration recently eased restrictions on Nvidia’s AI chip sales to China, the plan hints at tightening export controls to protect U.S. technology from foreign adversaries.
The current administration sees AI as “an industrial revolution, an information revolution, and a renaissance—all at once,” and aims to accelerate AI development and propel America far ahead in the field. However, the plan has already sparked debate, with critics accusing the administration of removing guardrails in favor of Big Tech companies at the expense of the public.

OpenAI’s Sam Altman Sounds Alarm on AI-Driven Fraud Crisis

Speaking at a Federal Reserve conference, Altman cautioned that bad actors are on the verge of exploiting AI to bypass authentication systems, putting consumer accounts at serious risk.
Details:
Altman predicts a significant rise in AI-powered fraud targeting personal accounts, as malicious actors release advanced tools to fake authentication — calling it a “significant, impending fraud crisis” that could hit “very, very soon.”
He emphasized that AI has already outsmarted most current authentication methods, including voiceprints, which some financial institutions still rely on.
Altman urged society to rethink how consumers access their accounts, warning that the rapid pace of AI development leaves little time to prepare.
The comments were part of a wide-ranging interview about the economic and societal impacts of AI, in which Altman said that despite his warnings, AI will ultimately be a "democratic" good for America and its economy.

Turn your photos into videos and remix them in Google Photos

Google just announced new free AI features to Google Photos, allowing users to turn photos into videos and “remix” them into different styles like anime, comics, sketches, or 3D animations.
Note: The Photo-to-Video feature is gradually rolling out starting today to Android and iOS users in the U.S., while Remix will begin rolling out “in the next few weeks.”
Here’s how:
Open Google Photos and make sure it’s updated to the latest version.
Pick a picture from your photo gallery and choose one of two prompts — “Subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky” — to animate your photo into a full six-second clip.
Once it’s done, you can save and share your video.
The process is similar for the upcoming Remix option — just pick a photo and select a style.

Google also plans to launch a new ‘Create’ tab in August, bringing all of the app’s creative tools—Collages, Highlight Videos, Photo-to-Video, and Remix—into one place.

Google notes that these features are still experimental and admits that some outputs may not turn out as expected. Users can give feedback using thumbs up or thumbs down after each creation to help improve results over time.

A report from the Pew Research Center, based on data from 900 U.S. adults earlier this year, found that searches with AI Overviews are less likely to lead to further Google searches and also significantly reduce the number of links clicked.
CEO Vlad Tenev estimates that only "a minority" of the company’s new code is written by humans. Among the company’s engineers, "close to 100%" are using AI code editors.
The new features are currently powered by Veo 2, but the company says they’ll soon switch to Veo 3. They include photo-to-video generation and a range of AI-powered video effects.
The company is shutting down its research lab in Shanghai, which first opened in 2018 and focused on AI development, reportedly due to “strategic adjustments amid U.S.-China tensions.”
That’s a wrap!
