Google DeepMind Brings Sign Language Translation to Phones

Google DeepMind has introduced a new AI model that can translate American Sign Language into English text directly from a smartphone, giving deaf and hard-of-hearing users a new way to communicate and interact with their devices.

Details:

• The new SL2T model is debuting on the Pixel 11 family through Gboard and Live Transcribe, allowing users to sign where they would normally type, including when writing messages, searching the web, or interacting with Gemini.

• The model reads simultaneous hand, body, and facial movements and turns them into English text in real time.

• DeepMind trained SL2T on more than 100,000 hours of multilingual sign-language data, although the system only supports ASL-to-English translation at launch.

• The company says SL2T is the most capable sign language translation model to date according to key benchmarks, and that it was also built to handle practical situations, like one-handed signing while holding the phone.

DeepMind says the model was developed with heavy input from the Deaf community. They also announced plans to expand it to more languages next.

SpaceXAI has introduced Grok Bot, an always-on AI agent service designed to behave like independent AI teammates that "have their own computer, work inside tools and apps like you do, and keep working 24/7."

Details:
