OpenAI Shifts Focus to Coding Tools and Enterprise Customers

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is reportedly changing its strategy. Instead of spreading resources across numerous product fronts, the company plans to focus more narrowly on coding tools and business users.

Details:

  • Last year, OpenAI announced a flood of new products: Sora, the Atlas web browser, a hardware device built with Jony Ive, and more. At the time, Altman compared the approach to "betting on a series of startups" within OpenAI.

  • The numerous parallel projects led to a lack of focus, and the strategic direction was hard to follow at times. To make matters worse, recent projects like the Sora standalone app and ChatGPT agent reportedly struggled to maintain user traction after launch.

  • The new direction was outlined internally by Fidji Simo, with Sam Altman and Mark Chen reviewing which projects to scale back.

  • "We cannot miss this moment because we are distracted by side quests," Simo told employees. "We really have to nail productivity in general and particularly productivity on the business front."

The move was also partly driven by growing competition from Anthropic, which has deliberately stayed away from audio, image, and video generation, zeroing in on the enterprise and coding market instead, finding success with products like Claude Code and Cowork.

NVIDIA

NVIDIA Unveils DLSS 5 with Photorealistic AI Graphics

Nvidia introduced DLSS 5 at its GTC event, a new version of its upscaling technology that uses generative AI to modify lighting, materials, and overall visuals in games in real time.

Details:

  • Unlike earlier versions, DLSS 5 doesn’t just enhance resolution, it actively changes elements like shadows, textures, and lighting using AI.

  • The system is trained to understand scene details such as characters, hair, fabric, and lighting conditions, then generate updated visuals from a single frame.

  • Early demos in games like Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy show more lifelike visuals, but also noticeable stylistic changes.

  • The technology supports real-time performance up to 4K resolution and is expected to launch this fall with limited game support, including big titles like The Elder Scrolls VI: Oblivion remake and Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Some critics say the updates resemble "AI filters" that alter the original artistic intent, especially in character appearance and lighting. Nvidia, however, says developers will have control over how strongly DLSS 5 affects visuals, with options to adjust color, contrast, and where effects are applied, leaving the final look ultimately in their hands.
