Researchers Warn Safety Protections on Open Models Can Now Be Removed in Minutes

Researchers and developers are warning that safety protections on open AI models can now be stripped away quickly using widely available software tools.
Details:
Researchers from AI safety group Alice and FT demonstrated that guardrails could be removed from models like Google's Gemma and Meta's Llama in just minutes using publicly available tools and minimal technical expertise.
The process relies on techniques such as “abliteration,” which removes or weakens safety layers built into open-source AI systems.
These modified models reportedly responded to prompts involving malware, chemical attacks, and other harmful content after their original safeguards were removed.
Such techniques are significantly harder to apply to proprietary models like Claude or ChatGPT, since their underlying code is not accessible to outsiders.
Researchers warn the issue will only grow more concerning as open models continue to close the gap with frontier proprietary systems.

Huawei Says It Found a New Way to Build Cutting-Edge Chips

Huawei claims it has developed an alternative chipmaking approach that could allow it to match leading semiconductor companies without relying on the advanced manufacturing equipment restricted by the U.S.
Details:
Huawei says its new chip architecture could eventually achieve transistor densities comparable to chips produced with a 1.4-nanometer process, considered the next frontier of semiconductor manufacturing.
The company’s approach reportedly avoids dependence on the highly specialized EUV lithography machines made by ASML, which China has been blocked from accessing under U.S. export controls.
Huawei executive He Tingbo said the company’s strategy focuses on improving efficiency through techniques like stacking multiple circuit layers and optimizing data movement instead of relying only on shrinking transistors.
Huawei expects the strategy to help it design competitive high-end processors by around 2031.
Huawei says it has spent the last six years refining the technology and has already mass-produced hundreds of chip models using the approach. The company plans to introduce its new “LogicFolding” architecture in upcoming Kirin smartphone chips later this year, while also applying the technology to AI processors.

China is reportedly requiring top AI researchers working on strategic projects to receive government approval before traveling abroad. The restrictions affect employees at companies such as Alibaba and DeepSeek, amid concerns over data leaks, technology theft, and talent recruitment by foreign rivals.
Uber president Andrew Macdonald said it is becoming harder to justify rising AI costs because the company still struggles to clearly connect AI usage with better consumer features. Macdonald noted that while AI-related metrics like token consumption are growing rapidly, the impact on productivity and product improvements remains difficult to measure.
Aleksander Madry is leaving OpenAI after previously serving as the company’s head of preparedness and one of its top AI safety leaders. Madry had shifted last year to a role focused on AI reasoning research. He said his next project will center on AI’s broader impact on the economy.
Google shared results from new studies in Sierra Leone and Italy exploring how Gemini tools affect teaching and learning outcomes. In Sierra Leone, students using Gemini-powered learning tools reportedly improved math performance, while educators in Italy said the technology helped personalize lessons and reduce administrative work.
