OPENAI

Encyclopedia Britannica Sues OpenAI Over AI Training

Encyclopaedia Britannica and its dictionary subsidiary Merriam-Webster have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in Manhattan federal court.

Details:

  • The publishers claim nearly 100,000 copyrighted online articles were scraped and used to train OpenAIโ€™s language models without permission.

  • The lawsuit also alleges that AI outputs sometimes reproduce full or partial sections of their content verbatim, backing the claim with side-by-side comparisons of OpenAI's model responses and Britannica's text where entire passages appear to match word-for-word.

  • Britannica also accuses OpenAI of "cannibalizing" its web traffic, arguing that the company's models generate responses that "substitute, or directly compete" with Britannica's content instead of directing users to its website the way a traditional search engine would.

Britannica joins a growing list of publishers pursuing legal action against AI companies over copyright. The New York Times, Ziff Davis, and dozens of newspapers across the US and Canada have all sued OpenAI over similar concerns. A similar Britannica lawsuit against Perplexity is also still pending.

META

Meta Is Reportedly Planning Layoffs That Could Affect 20% or More of Its Workforce

Meta Platforms is reportedly considering large scale layoffs that could impact 20% or more of its workforce as the company ramps up spending on AI, according to a report from Reuters.

Details:

  • The potential cuts could help offset Meta's heavy AI-related investments, including infrastructure, hiring, and acquisitions.

  • No date has been set for the cuts and the magnitude has not been finalized, sources said.

  • If Meta settles on the 20% figure, the layoffs would be the company's most significant since its restructuring in late 2022 and early 2023, dubbed the "year of efficiency," which eliminated around 21,000 jobs.

  • A 20% staff cut could amount to about $6 billion in cost savings, or a 5% boost to adjusted core earnings, according to Rosenblatt Securities analyst Barton Crockett.

  • Meta, whose workforce totaled 79,000 at the end of December, responded to the report calling it "speculative reporting about theoretical approaches."

The company has spent heavily in recent years building data centers and waging a talent war to catch up in the AI race, yet has yet to release a model that can challenge industry leaders. It remains hopeful that its new superintelligence team can reassert its standing as soon as this year, though its upcoming Avocado model has already faced delays.

The company had planned to make Seedance 2.0 available globally in mid-March, but is now delaying those plans as its legal team works to identify and resolve potential legal issues and its engineers add safeguards to prevent the model from generating content that could lead to intellectual property violations.

It is currently available for iOS in the Perplexity app, with Android support coming soon.

Days after Meta acquired the "social" network for AI agents, the platform updated its terms of service. Users must now be 13 or older to use the site and are "solely responsible" for actions taken by their AI agents, whether they "act autonomously or otherwise, and irrespective of whether such actions or omissions were intended."

Anthropic announced that Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 now include the full 1M context window at standard pricing on the Claude Platform.

The company is also doubling usage limits outside peak hours for the next two weeks (including Claude Code and all plans), and introducing a new /btw feature in Claude Code that allows users to have side conversations while Claude is working.

Using the company's Gemini, the team scanned around five million news articles and identified roughly 2.6 million flood events, turning those reports into a geotagged dataset called Groundsource.

The dataset was then used to train a forecasting model based on a Long Short-Term Memory neural network that estimates flash flood risk using global weather forecasts. The system now highlights potential flood risks across urban areas in about 150 countries through Google's Flood Hub platform, and is sharing its data with emergency response agencies in these locations to help them respond more quickly.
