OpenAI Robotics Head Quits Over Pentagon Deal, Citing Ethics Concerns

Caitlin Kalinowski, who had been leading hardware and robotics operations teams at OpenAI since November 2024, announced she has left the company, citing the company's deal to deploy its AI models within the Pentagon's classified network as the cause.
Details:
"AI has an important role in national security. But surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got," she wrote in the social media post announcing her resignation.
She emphasized that the decision was "about principle, not people" and said she has "deep respect" for CEO Sam Altman and the OpenAI team.
In a follow-up post, she clarified that her concern was that "the announcement was rushed without the guardrails defined," calling it "a governance concern first and foremost."
OpenAI struck its deal with the Pentagon in late February following the breakdown of talks between the Trump administration and Anthropic, a move that drew some criticism, with CEO Sam Altman later acknowledging the initial rollout was "opportunistic and sloppy" and outlining revisions.
An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the departure and provided a statement saying they believe the agreement with the Defense Department "creates a workable path for responsible national security uses of AI while making clear our red lines: no domestic surveillance and no autonomous weapons," adding that they will "continue to engage in discussion with employees, government, civil society and communities around the world" on the matter.

OpenAI Is Delaying ChatGPT's "Adult Mode"

OpenAI has delayed the launch of "adult mode," a ChatGPT feature that would give verified users access to erotica and other explicit content.
Details:
The feature was first announced in October and was supposed to roll out in December, but OpenAI later moved the launch to the first quarter of this year while it worked to improve its age estimation systems.
Now, the company is "pushing out" the adult mode launch to some unspecified time in the future to "focus on work that is a higher priority for more users right now, including gains in intelligence, personality improvements, personalisation, and making the experience more proactive."
According to OpenAI, more time will allow it to further improve its age prediction and protection mechanisms for younger users.
The company closed by saying it "still believe[s] in the principle of treating adults like adults, but getting the experience right will take more time."

The new platform will let customers purchase software applications that use Anthropic's models, with options including services from Snowflake Inc., Harvey and Replit Inc.
The AI-powered application security agent is designed to help security teams find and patch vulnerabilities in large databases, potentially cutting into demand for legacy cyber firms.
The integration was built in close collaboration with Anthropic and aims to help Copilot perform "long-running, multi-step tasks." The feature is currently being tested with a limited set of customers in Research Preview and will be more broadly available through the Frontier program later this month.
