OpenAI launches ChatGPT Atlas to challenge Google Chrome

OpenAI’s new internet browser integrates directly with ChatGPT and includes features like a sidebar that lets users ask ChatGPT questions about the web pages they visit. The company describes it as having “a true super-assistant” built in.

Details:

  • Whenever the user clicks a link from a search result, the chatbot follows them in a side panel and automatically gains context from whatever is on the screen to answer any questions the user might have.

  • The browser also has a memories feature that lets ChatGPT remember context from the sites you visit and bring that context back when you need it, making the browser “more personalized and more helpful to you.”

  • Users can turn browser memory on or off and manage the data ChatGPT is allowed to see.

  • The Agent Mode lets ChatGPT “take action and do things for you right in your own browser,” meaning it can complete more complex tasks such as planning events or booking appointments.

  • ChatGPT Atlas is available globally on macOS starting today, with Windows, iOS, and Android versions coming soon, though the Agent Mode feature is currently limited to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users.

CEO Sam Altman said he hopes Atlas will introduce a new way of interacting with the web. However, they’re entering an increasingly competitive space, with emerging players like Perplexity’s Comet and The Browser Company’s Dia, as well as giants like Google and Microsoft, who are constantly updating Chrome and Edge with new AI-powered features.

AI REGULATION

AI Leaders Call for Ban on Superintelligent AI

Scientists, policymakers, actors, and others are calling for a ban on the development of superintelligent AI until it is proven safe and controllable.

Details:

  • The call to action was organized by the Future of Life Institute and currently has more than 2,200 signatures.

  • Prominent names on the list include AI pioneers Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Richard Branson, Steve Bannon, Susan Rice, musician will.i.am, and actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

  • The group also shared results from a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted between September 29 and October 5, which found that 64% support an “immediate pause” on advanced AI development, while three-quarters said they want stronger regulations on how AI is developed and used.

The U.S. has prioritized speed over oversight in its race to lead global AI innovation, as AI “doomers” have lost influence with policymakers. This is not the first time such an effort has been made: in 2023, the Future of Life Institute and many of the same signatories published a similar letter calling for a six-month pause on training any models more powerful than GPT-4, a request that was also ignored.
