ANTHROPIC
Anthropic's Claude Rises to No. 1 in the App Store After Pentagon Saga

Anthropic's Claude app surged to No. 1 on the Apple US App Store's top free apps list late on Saturday, following a high-profile public dispute between Anthropic and the U.S. government regarding military use of its AI technology.
Details:
Anthropic refused a "final offer" from the Department of War that, according to the company, would have required it to remove safeguards against its AI being used for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons.
Its presence in news headlines due to the refusal, and even being attacked by President Donald Trump in a Friday Truth Social post, has put the company in the spotlight, driving users to its chatbot.
Before the dispute, the Claude app was ranked 131st in January 2026; since the standoff began, daily sign-ups have tripled, and the free user base has grown by over 60%. The startup also reports that its paying subscribers have more than doubled this year.
The news is a silver lining for the startup, which stands to lose the Pentagon contract worth as much as $200 million and has now been designated a "supply-chain risk to national security," effectively banning federal agencies and defense contractors from using its technology.

OPENAI
OpenAI Strikes Deal With Pentagon Amid Anthropic Feud

OpenAI announced late on Friday that it had finalized a deal with the Department of War to use its AI models with guardrails similar to those Anthropic had also requested.
Details:
According to the New York Times, OpenAI took a different negotiating path than Anthropic. Altman agreed to deploy its models for βall legal purposesβ but negotiated the right to build technical safeguards into its own systems.
Altman said OpenAI "will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the DoW also wanted," and that it will deploy engineers with the Pentagon "to help with our models and to ensure their safety."
Under the agreement, there are three areas where OpenAI's models cannot be used: mass domestic surveillance, autonomous weapon systems, and high-stakes automated decisions. The company added that those redlines could expand as the technology evolves and "new risks" come into play.
OpenAI added, "We don't know why Anthropic could not reach this deal, and we hope that they and more labs will consider it." During an AMA on X, Altman speculated that "Anthropic may have wanted more operational control than we did."
After the announcement drew heavy criticism, Altman admitted the deal was "definitely rushed" and that "the optics don't look good," but maintained their intention was to "de-escalate things" and that he thought "the deal on offer was good."
