OpenAI Adds the o3-pro Model to ChatGPT

OpenAI has launched o3-pro, an AI reasoning model that the company claims is its most capable yet.

Details:

  • In expert evaluations, o3-pro outperformed o3 in every tested category—especially in key domains like science, education, programming, business, and writing help—and scored higher for clarity, comprehensiveness, instruction-following, and accuracy.

  • It also fares well in popular AI benchmarks, scoring better than Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro on AIME 2024 (math skills) and outperforming Claude 4 Opus on GPQA Diamond (a test of PhD-level science knowledge).

  • o3-pro has access to tools, allowing it to search the web, analyze files and visual inputs, use Python, and more.

  • The model does have some limitations. For example, its responses are typically slower than o1-pro’s, and some features like image generation, Canvas, and Temporary chats are currently disabled for it.

  • It is priced at $20 per million input tokens and $80 per million output tokens in the API, meanwhile, o3 is seeing its prices reduced by 80%.

o3-pro is currently available in OpenAI’s developer API and for ChatGPT Pro and Team users (it will replace the o1-pro model). Enterprise and Edu users will get access next week.

MISTRAL AI

Mistral Releases Two Reasoning Models

The company has introduced Magistral, its first family of reasoning models, which includes Magistral Small, an open-source 24B model, and Magistral Medium, a more powerful proprietary version designed for enterprise use.

Details:

  • According to the company, these models are “designed for research, strategic planning, operational optimization, and data-driven decision-making.”

  • And while they still lag behind leading models like Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4 on benchmarks, they remain competitive with others like DeepSeek’s R1.

  • They also have other advantages. Mistral claims Magistral delivers answers at “10x” the speed of competitors in Le Chat and supports a wide array of languages, including Italian, Arabic, Russian, and Simplified Chinese.

  • Magistral Small is available for download from the AI dev platform Hugging Face under the Apache 2.0 license, while Magistral Medium is in preview on Mistral’s Le Chat, the company’s API, and through third-party partner clouds.

This launch marks the debut of Europe’s first reasoning-focused AI models, and while Mistral is considered the continent’s most promising AI lab with over €1.1 billion raised, it is still struggling to match the pace of leading competitors, which is evident in the time it took to release its first reasoning models.

How to get the most out of Google’s free AI Studio

Google’s AI Studio makes it easy to try the company’s new AI tools for free — no tech skills or subscription required; you just need to sign in with your Google account. Here are some Google AI experiments worth checking out:

You can generate images from scratch, or upload a photo and use Gemini to transform it with prompts.

Select single or multi-speaker depending on whether you want a narration or a conversation between two people, and then enter your text.

In the settings, you can choose which AI voices to use. Each one is labeled with a characteristic, like upbeat, informative, or mature.

Once you're done, click Run to generate the conversation.

You can then listen to the result, edit it further, or download the file if you want to keep it.

Google’s AI Studio gives you access to Veo 2 to generate short video clips.

Just write a prompt and, optionally, upload a photo to suggest a visual direction. Then pick a length (5 to 8 seconds), select horizontal or vertical orientation, and click Run.

You can use AI to make a GIF with Magical GIF Maker — just enter your text and click "Generate Magic."

This is one of 20 showcase apps in the Build section of AI Studio. You can also experiment with others, like Tiny Cats, a playful app that creates short, step-by-step visual guides using charming cat illustrations to explain any concept.

The latest in AI and Tech

CEO Sam Altman says to expect it “later this summer but not June.”

An apparently leaked GitHub page has revealed the Trump administration is working on a website called ai.gov, set to launch on July 4 with the aim of trying to, “accelerate government innovation with AI”

The new model more than doubles the speed of the previous one at 720p resolution and is already available in both the Gemini app and Flow. Additionally, the daily limit for Gemini Pro users has increased to three video generations per day, up from the previous one-time, ten-credit pack.

In a blog post, the OpenAI CEO revealed that an average ChatGPT query consumes about 0.34 watt-hours of energy, "about what a high-efficiency lightbulb would use in a couple of minutes," and about 0.000085 gallons of water, "roughly one fifteenth of a teaspoon."

This comes amid growing concern over AI’s environmental footprint.

This new model aims to tackle the “AI look” problem (soft textures, excessive contrast, boring compositions or styles, etc.) that affect most models.

It is currently available in private beta. Users can apply for free early access here.
