OpenAI Plans to Team Up with Governments to Boost AI Infrastructure

OpenAI has announced a new initiative called "OpenAI for Countries," aiming to work hand-in-hand with governments worldwide to build AI infrastructure and promote AI that ā€œprotects and incorporates long-standing democratic principlesā€ rather than ā€œauthoritarian versions of AI.ā€

Details:

  • The new effort aims to partner with countries or regions to build and operate data centers that would offer localized versions of OpenAI’s products, including ChatGPT, tailored to meet citizens’ needs, with a focus on healthcare and education.

  • The company described it as ā€œAI of, by, and for the needs of each particular country.ā€

  • OpenAI plans to support 10 international projects to start, with funding coming from both the organization and the governments of participating countries, though the locations have not been revealed yet.

  • Chris Lehane, OpenAI's chief global affairs officer, stated that the program was created after the AI Action Summit in Paris, where several countries showed interest in their own "Stargate"-style project.

OpenAI expects these partnerships to support continued U.S. leadership in AI and help create a ā€œglobal, growing network effect for democratic AI,ā€ which essentially means convincing other countries to use Western AI models—particularly OpenAI’s—over Chinese competitors.

Mistral AI Launches Medium 3, Promising Low Cost and High Performance

French AI startup Mistral has introduced its latest model, Mistral Medium 3, which aims to deliver top-tier performance at a fraction of the cost of its competitors.

Details:

  • The company claims Mistral Medium 3 performs ā€œat or aboveā€ 90% of Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 3.7 model on ā€œbenchmarks across the board,ā€ at a much lower cost, while also outperforming recent open models like Meta’s Llama 4 Maverick and Cohere’s Command A.

  • It is optimized for coding, STEM tasks, and multimodal understanding, and is available via API at $0.40 per million input tokens and $2 per million output tokens.

  • Alongside the model, Mistral introduced Le Chat Enterprise, a corporate-focused chatbot service that integrates with tools like Gmail, Google Drive, and SharePoint, offering businesses a secure and customizable AI assistant with features like agent building, document libraries, hybrid deployments, and more.

While not on par with the top proprietary models, the new model stands out as a cost-effective, high-performing alternative in the competitive AI landscape. The company also hints at working on something ā€œlargeā€ in the coming weeks.
