ChatGPT Gets a New Study Mode

The new feature is designed to help students learn more effectively by encouraging them to think, not just copy answers.
Details:
With Study Mode enabled, ChatGPT asks guiding questions and encourages students to work through problems on their own, sometimes even refusing direct answers unless they actively engage with the material.
The feature is currently available to all logged-in ChatGPT users, including those on the Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, and will reach Edu subscribers in the coming weeks.
The launch comes amid concerns from recent research showing that while ChatGPT can be a helpful tutor for young people, it can also harm their critical thinking skills.
There are currently no controls for parents or teachers; students can easily switch back to regular mode at any time, though OpenAI is exploring administrative and parental options to lock students into Study Mode.
Educational institutions have long struggled with student use of AI. Back in 2023, concerns led to a wave of generative AI bans across American school districts. Since then, some of those bans have been reversed as educators acknowledged that AI would inevitably become part of students’ lives and began focusing on how to use it effectively for learning. This shift created a major opportunity for AI companies. Anthropic, for example, introduced a similar “Learning Mode” for its Claude chatbot in April.

New Features Coming to Google’s AI Mode

Google is rolling out new features for AI Mode in Search, its experimental tool that searches the web, summarizes results for users, and allows follow-up questions.
Details:
The new Canvas in AI Mode can help students create study guides by pulling together information in the Canvas sidebar, allowing them to refine the output in real time by asking additional questions.
AI Mode now lets users ask questions about uploaded images and PDFs, with support for more file types coming later this year, including files from Google Drive.
Google is also bringing Project Astra capabilities into AI Mode through Search Live. Users can now have back-and-forth conversations with Search in AI Mode using visual input from their camera feed.
Lens in AI Mode now allows users to ask about anything on their desktop screen—such as diagrams, homework problems, or anything else they’re viewing in the browser.
Most of these features are rolling out in the coming weeks for users in the U.S. who are part of the AI Mode Labs experiment—except for PDF and image support, which is already available.
