OpenAI Slams Court Order to Save All ChatGPT Logs

OpenAI is fighting a court order to preserve all ChatGPT user logs—including chats that users have manually deleted.

Details:

  • In a blog post, the company criticized the court order issued as part of The New York Times’ copyright lawsuit against it.

  • When a user deletes a chat, OpenAI keeps it for 30 days before deleting it permanently, but this policy is now on hold until the court says otherwise.

  • Sam Altman weighed in on X, calling it an "inappropriate request that sets a bad precedent" and even proposing the concept of an “AI privilege” to protect the confidentiality of people’s chats with AI: “Talking to an AI should be like talking to a lawyer or a doctor.”

  • The New York Times argues that by deleting the logs, OpenAI could erase incriminating evidence that might support its case.

While the ruling came weeks ago, the news has only recently come to light now that OpenAI is challenging the order. The company has also noted that it will only impact free, Pro, Plus, and Team ChatGPT users. It won’t affect ChatGPT Enterprise or ChatGPT Edu customers, or businesses that have a zero data retention agreement.

OpenAI Upgrades ChatGPT Voice Mode for a More Natural Conversation Experience

OpenAI has updated ChatGPT's voice features for subscribers, making it sound a lot more natural and expressive.

Details:

  • Advanced Voice Mode now delivers smoother, more emotionally nuanced speech, with improvements in intonation, pauses, and the ability to convey empathy or sarcasm in a more authentic way.

  • The update also makes it much more effective at translation, consistently translating multiple turns and speakers without instructions or interruptions until told to stop.

  • The company notes that it currently has some limitations, such as occasional minor decreases in audio quality and hallucinations—issues that have persisted since previous versions, with some users reporting problems like ChatGPT suddenly playing an advertisement in the middle of a conversation.

This upgrade is already available for all paid users. Just tap the Voice icon in the chat interface to get started.

The paper titled The Illusion of Thinking found that reasoning models “face a complete accuracy collapse beyond certain complexities,” especially with problems they’ve never encountered before.

They presented models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and DeepSeek with new and complex puzzle games and found that their reasoning ability “increases with problem complexity up to a point, then declines,” regardless of how much computing power is given to them.

Fontaine's appointment follows Anthropic's recent launch of AI models tailored for U.S. national security applications. As a trustee, Fontaine brings extensive experience, having previously served as a foreign policy adviser to the late Senator John McCain and as president of the Center for a New American Security.

The company is reportedly in discussions to invest over $10 billion in Scale AI, a data labeling startup that has previously received backing from major tech companies including Nvidia, Amazon, and Meta itself. The terms of the deal are still under negotiation and may change, according to Bloomberg News .

Those found to have misused AI could face sanctions, ranging from public admonishment to contempt of court proceedings and referral to the police. That doesn’t mean lawyers cannot use AI in their research, but they have a professional duty “to check the accuracy of such research by reference to authoritative sources, before using it in the course of their professional work.”
