OpenAI Completes For-Profit Transition, Extends Microsoft Partnership Until 2032

OpenAI has completed its transition to a for-profit public benefit corporation called OpenAI Group PBC, and as part of the restructuring, it has struck a new deal with Microsoft, bringing significant changes.
Details:
Under the new structure, the original non-profit is now called the OpenAI Foundation and retains legal control over the PBC, which is free to raise funding or acquire companies without legal restraint.
The OpenAI Foundation will hold a 26% stake in the PBC, worth around $130 billion, while Microsoft, which has invested more than $13 billion into OpenAI, will own a 27% stake valued at $135 billion. The remaining 47% is held by investors and employees.
Microsoft will no longer lose rights to OpenAI’s technology once AGI is reached, and its IP rights for models and products are now extended through 2032 and include post-AGI models.
Plus, what constitutes AGI (previously set to be defined by OpenAI) will now be decided by an independent expert panel.
Microsoft’s rights are limited in other ways: its IP rights to OpenAI’s research will only remain through 2030 or until the expert panel verifies that AGI has been reached, whichever comes first, and they do not cover OpenAI’s consumer hardware (such as the device they are building with designer Jony Ive).
In exchange, OpenAI has pledged $250 billion to Azure cloud computing services, though Microsoft no longer has a "right of first refusal" to be OpenAI’s cloud provider.
This restructuring concludes a complex legal process that faced strong scrutiny, especially from cofounder Elon Musk. Completing it was critical for the startup, as reports suggest that if it hadn’t announced the restructuring by New Year’s Eve, OpenAI could have lost up to $10 billion of its previously announced SoftBank investment

1X Unveils Neo, a $20,000 Home Robot That Learns Chores With Human Teleoperators

1X is taking pre-orders for Neo, a humanoid home robot capable of autonomously handling basic chores like opening doors, fetching items, and toggling lights.
Details:
1X CEO Bernt Børnich admitted that more specific or complex tasks will initially be handled by teleoperators.
He explained that these operators are necessary because the AI neural network powering the robot still needs to learn from real-world experiences.
The goal is to gather training data so Neo can eventually perform tasks autonomously.
1X says owners can control access and privacy through scheduled teleoperation windows, no-go zones, people blurring, and explicit approvals before handover. The robot also includes multiple safety layers.
Pricing starts at $20,000 for early access, with a $200 deposit and a $499 per month subscription option.
If you want to see more of the robot in action, the WSJ made a video that is definitely worth a watch.

It took Nvidia about 13 months to grow from $3 trillion to $4 trillion in valuation, and just three months more to reach $5 trillion.
The rebranding follows the acquisition of the email client of the same name, while the company’s core writing tool will continue to be called Grammarly.

Cameo claims Sora’s “cameo” feature confuses consumers and harms its brand reputation.
The company argues that OpenAI’s use of the name links Cameo to “hastily made AI slop” and deepfakes, damaging the authenticity of its celebrity video service.
OpenAI, in turn, says that “no one can claim exclusive ownership over the word ‘cameo’” and that it will defend itself in court.
