OpenAI Brings GPT-4.1 and 4.1 mini to ChatGPT

OpenAI has officially introduced its new GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models to ChatGPT.
Details:
Both GPT-4.1 and GPT‑4.1 mini are faster and especially strong at programming tasks and following instructions precisely, outperforming GPT‑4o and GPT‑4o mini “across the board.”
The new models also support a one-million-token context window — far surpassing GPT-4o’s 128,000-token limit — and OpenAI claims their speed makes them more appealing for everyday coding tasks compared to the powerful o3 and o4-mini reasoning models.
GPT-4.1 is now available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. Enterprise and Edu users are expected to get access in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, GPT‑4.1 mini has replaced GPT‑4o mini as the default model for all ChatGPT users, including those on the free tier.
The models were made available to developers just last month, with the initial plan of keeping them “API only,” but they’re now being added to ChatGPT following strong user feedback.

Google Debuts AlphaEvolve

DeepMind has developed AlphaEvolve, a new Gemini-powered coding agent designed to discover and optimize algorithms while building “upon the most promising ideas.”
Details:
AlphaEvolve pairs Google’s Gemini large language models with an evolutionary approach that automatically tests, refines, and improves algorithms.
The system’s automatic evaluation mechanism critiques possible answers and scores them for accuracy, cutting down on common AI issues like hallucinations.
To benchmark AlphaEvolve, DeepMind tested it on a curated set of about 50 math problems. The system “rediscovered” the best-known solutions 75% of the time and found improved solutions in 20% of cases.
Google also evaluated AlphaEvolve on practical problems, claiming it has helped the company improve efficiency in its data centers, chip design, and AI training processes.
Limitations: It can only solve problems it can self-evaluate, limiting it to fields like computer science and system optimization. It also describes solutions only as algorithms, making it a poor fit for non-numerical problems.
The company expects AlphaEvolve to continue improving alongside large language models, especially as they get better at coding. They are currently exploring providing access to it outside of Google through an Early Access Program, and those interested can register here.

How to decide what to watch using AI

With so many streaming services and podcasts out there, this AI tool makes it easier to decide what to watch next.
Go to the Pix tool on the Likewise website or text “Pix” to 550550. (You can also access it via email at [email protected] or through the app.)
Ask about any type of entertainment — books, podcasts, TV shows, or movies — and Pix will suggest options for you depending on your preferences and interests.
Example prompt: “Send me some scary movies on Prime or Hulu. No slashers please.”
The tool is specifically trained to offer entertainment recommendations and is free to use.

The company announced a new ad tool called "Peak Points," which uses AI to place ads at “contextually relevant” moments in videos when viewers are most likely to be engaged.
The new voice activation feature allows users to initiate Copilot Voice interactions hands-free. It is currently available to Windows Insiders with Copilot app version 1.25051.10.0 or higher. Once activated, a floating microphone icon appears at the bottom of the screen, accompanied by a chime indicating the system is listening.
Perplexity AI has partnered with PayPal to introduce in-chat shopping capabilities for U.S. users. This integration, set to launch this summer for Perplexity Pro subscribers, allows users to make purchases—such as booking travel or buying tickets—directly within the chat interface using PayPal or Venmo.
OpenAI introduced a new Safety Evaluations Hub, providing insights into model performance concerning harmful content generation, jailbreaks, and hallucinations. OpenAI plans to update this hub regularly, particularly following major model updates, to offer a clearer understanding of AI safety over time .
The company claims it is the “first open-source model in the industry to provide a unified solution for various video generation and editing tasks.”
