OPENAI

OpenAI’s First Device with Jony Ive May Face Delays

A new Financial Times report says OpenAI and Jony Ive are struggling to overcome key technical challenges as they race to finish their highly anticipated AI device.

Details:

  • The device is described as “a palm-sized device without a screen that can take audio and visual cues from the physical environment and respond to users’ requests.”

  • Unresolved issues include deciding on the assistant’s personality, such as how it sounds, when it speaks up, and when it stops. The goal is to create “a friend who’s a computer,” not a “weird AI girlfriend.

  • There are also privacy concerns, as OpenAI is reportedly testing an “always-on” approach that gathers context throughout the day instead of waking only on a keyword like “Alexa.” This raises clear privacy issues that must be addressed before the launch of the always-listening device.

  • Finally, budget constraints for computing infrastructure also pose challenges. As one source noted, “Amazon has the compute for Alexa, and so does Google for its Home device, but OpenAI is struggling to get enough compute for ChatGPT, let alone an AI device.”

This will reportedly be the first in a family of devices planned by Ive and Sam Altman, originally expected to launch next year but now potentially delayed if these critical problems persist.

SUPERMEMORY

Google Execs Back 19-Year-Old’s Supermemory to Boost AI’s Long-Term Memory

Dhravya Shah, a 19-year-old founder from Mumbai now in the U.S., raised $2.6M to build Supermemory, a “universal memory” API that helps AI apps recall and use past context across files, chats, and more.

Details:

  • Supermemory builds a knowledge graph from unstructured data and returns fast, relevant context for AI apps across text, audio, video, and images.

  • Use cases include long-term recall for writers and journals, search across old emails, and fetching the right video assets on command

  • Backers include Susa Ventures, Browder Capital, SF1. vc, plus Jeff Dean, Dane Knecht, Logan Kilpatrick, and leaders from OpenAI and Meta

  • The company already has customers like Cluely, Montra, Scira, Rube, and Rets.

Supermemory will face competition in the memory space from companies such as Felicis Ventures and Mem0 but remains confident it can stand out by offering lower latency.

The company has acquired the team behind the Sequoia-backed AI design startup Visual Electric. Deal terms were not disclosed, and Visual Electric’s team will join Perplexity’s new Agent Experiences group.

The company has secured a major long-term agreement to provide OpenAI with multiple generations of Instinct GPUs, delivering up to six gigawatts of compute power.

The deal also grants OpenAI a warrant to acquire up to 10% of AMD if key milestones are met, marking a major step for AMD as it challenges Nvidia’s dominance while OpenAI continues to diversify its chip partnerships.

The update includes several new features, such as “video agents” that can appear in videos, hold real-time conversations, answer questions, and access company data.

The update also brings more lifelike avatars with smoother motion, faster voice cloning, and automatic translation.

Roi is a personal finance app that combines portfolio tracking with an AI chatbot for investing advice. While deal terms weren’t disclosed, reports say that Roi CEO Sujith Vishwajith will be the only one to join OpenAI.
