Upset ChatGPT Fans Prompt OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to Respond

Amid heavy criticism of the changes that came with the release of GPT-5, CEO Sam Altman took to X and even participated in Reddit AMAs to acknowledge the concerns, then followed up with steps to address some of them.

Details:

  • The new model is being called a ā€œhorrible downgradeā€ by many, with others claiming it lacks the personality, creativity, and ā€œemotional nuanceā€ of its predecessors. Paid subscribers, in particular, have also criticized the removal of the model picker.

  • Some have also pointed out its performance in benchmarks like SimpleBench—a test designed to measure everyday common sense and reasoning skills—where GPT-5 underperforms compared to Gemini 2.5 Pro, Grok 4, Claude 4.1 Opus, and Claude 4 Opus Thinking.

  • Sam Altman admitted they underestimated how much users valued some characteristics of GPT-4o, but insisted that GPT-5 performs better in most ways and will continue to improve.

  • He also announced a series of changes, including restoring access to GPT-4o and other old models and doubling GPT-5 rate limits for Plus users, as well as changing the UI to make it easier to manually trigger thinking and to better indicate which model is working.

No one anticipated that the release of the much-awaited GPT-5 would be met with such a polarizing reception, and while it’s true that it is an improvement over its predecessors, as shown in the benchmarks shared by the company, it’s not the huge leap that was promised after months of hype.

For now, the startup has not finished making changes, promising to ā€œkeep listening to feedbackā€ and offer more transparency going forward.

TOGETHER WITH PACASO

Big investors are buying this ā€œunlistedā€ stock

When the founder who sold his last company to Zillow for $120M starts a new venture, people notice. That’s why the same VCs who backed Uber, Venmo, and eBay also invested in Pacaso.

Disrupting the real estate industry once again, Pacaso’s streamlined platform offers co-ownership of premier properties, revamping the $1.3T vacation home market.

And it works. By handing keys to 2,000+ happy homeowners, Pacaso has already made $110M+ in gross profits in their operating history.

Now, after 41% YoY gross profit growth last year alone, they recently reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO.

NASA and Google Create an AI Doctor for Astronauts

NASA and Google are working together on an AI medical assistant meant to help astronauts diagnose and treat health problems on their own during space missions.

Details:

  • NASA and Google are building an AI tool called Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant (CMO-DA). It’s designed to give medical advice to astronauts on long missions, like trips to Mars, when no doctor is available or communications to Earth are cut off.

  • The system uses text, speech, and images to help with diagnosis. It runs inside Google Cloud’s Vertex AI environment, and NASA has been helping to train the AI with its own information.

  • The AI was tested on three medical situations: an ankle injury, flank pain, and ear pain. Doctors found its advice was correct most of the time, with accuracy between 74% and 88%.

The plan is to add more medical information and teach the AI about space medicine-specific conditions like microgravity. This technology could not only make deep space travel safer as human spaceflight missions grow longer and travel farther from Earth, but it might also be used in regular doctor’s offices on Earth in the future.

The latest in AI and Tech

Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla has shut down its Dojo AI-supercomputer project, as the company redirects resources toward the more promising AI5 and AI6 chips.

Apple Intelligence can rely on ChatGPT for things like helping answer certain Siri queries, and currently it uses the GPT-4o model. These software updates are expected to arrive next month.

During its big GPT-5 livestream, OpenAI showed a few charts that contained several mistakes, which CEO Sam Altman called a "mega chart screwup."

He said, ā€œPeople were working late and were very tired, and human error got in the way. A lot comes together for a livestream in the last hours.ā€ The correct charts are now in the blog post.

The companies have agreed to give the U.S. government a 15% share of revenue from their AI chip sales in China for H20 and MI308 chips. The move is part of a new arrangement to restart exports of older-generation AI chips to Chinese companies.
