AURELIAN

911 Centers Lean on AI to Handle Non-Emergency Calls

Emergency dispatch centers are short-staffed and overwhelmed, so a startup named Aurelian is stepping in with an AI voice assistant that handles non-emergency calls, allowing human dispatchers to focus on real 911 emergencies.

Details:

  • The company’s AI voice agent is designed to triage non-urgent issues (noise complaints, parking violations, or stolen wallet reports), cases that don’t require an officer’s immediate response and can often be resolved without sending personnel to the scene.

  • In those situations, the AI collects key information and either creates a report or relays the details directly to the police department for follow-up action.

  • However, when it recognizes a real emergency, it immediately transfers the call to a human dispatcher.

  • Since May 2024, Aurelian has been deployed and handling live calls in over a dozen dispatch centers, including Snohomish County (WA), Chattanooga (TN), and Kalamazoo (MI).

Emergency call centers consistently struggle with understaffing, as dispatching is a high-pressure job and ranks among the industries with the highest turnover rates. With workers often forced into overtime, more departments are likely to turn to AI to ease pressure on staff, reduce hold times, and keep emergency lines clear.
