OpenAI Says Its AI Solved an 80-Year-Old Math Problem

OpenAI claims one of its latest reasoning models has produced an original mathematical proof that disproves a famous geometry conjecture first proposed by mathematician Paul Erdős in 1946.

Details:

  • The company says the AI discovered a completely new family of mathematical constructions that outperform approaches researchers had believed were optimal for nearly 80 years.

  • To avoid repeating last year's controversy, when OpenAI inaccurately claimed GPT-5 had solved previously unsolved problems, the company had the results independently reviewed by mathematicians including Noga Alon, Melanie Wood, and Thomas Bloom.

  • OpenAI says the proof came from a general-purpose reasoning model, not a system specifically trained only for mathematics or geometry research.

  • The company describes the result as the first time an AI system has autonomously solved a major open problem considered central to a field of mathematics.

OpenAI believes this is evidence that modern reasoning models can sustain long chains of logic and cross-domain thinking, and that similar systems could eventually help researchers tackle difficult scientific questions across fields like physics, biology, engineering, and medicine.

ANTHROPIC

Anthropic Pay xAI $1.25 Billion Per Month for Compute

Anthropic has reportedly signed a massive compute agreement with xAI, securing access to the full output of the Colossus 1 data center in a deal that could generate more than $40 billion in revenue for Elon Musk’s AI company.

Details:

  • The agreement gives access to roughly 300 megawatts of compute capacity from xAI’s Colossus 1 facility near Memphis, Tennessee.

  • Anthropic will pay approximately $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, with discounted pricing during the initial ramp-up period.

  • The deal reportedly allows both companies to terminate the contract with 90 days’ notice, while xAI indicated it expects to pursue similar infrastructure agreements in the future.

The arrangement highlights xAI's emerging role as both an AI developer and a large-scale compute provider, a hybrid strategy sometimes referred to as a "neocloud" model, in which AI companies offset the enormous costs of building data centers by renting out unused compute capacity to other labs when internal demand falls short.

Donald Trump has delayed signing an executive order that would create a government review process for advanced AI models before release. Trump said parts of the order “could have been a blocker” and stressed he did not want regulations to interfere with America’s lead in AI development.

The company has launched a new “Guaranteed Capacity” offering that lets customers secure long-term access to compute. The company says the program is designed to give businesses more certainty as demand for advanced AI models continues to rise, while also helping OpenAI better plan its infrastructure needs.

Intuit is laying off around 3,000 employees, or roughly 17% of its global workforce, as part of an effort to simplify operations and focus on key priorities, including AI.

Jeff Bezos said orbital data centers are a realistic future for the tech industry, though timelines of two to three years suggested by figures like Elon Musk are “a little ambitious.”

OpenAI is preparing to confidentially file for a U.S. initial public offering "in the coming days or weeks," according to the WSJ. The company is aiming to go public as early as September.
