White House Accuses China's Moonshot AI of Stealing from Anthropic 🤯

Welcome to another edition of Horizon AI,

Anthropic has added a new connector to Claude that lets you explore data from the Anthropic Economic Index. Instead of searching through reports, you can ask natural questions about how AI is being used across different occupations, industries, and tasks, with answers based directly on the dataset.

MOONSHOT AI

Trump Tech Official Accuses China's Moonshot AI of Stealing from Anthropic

White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios claimed the U.S. has "information that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic's Fable for the development of its K3 model."

Details:

  • Distillation is a technique where a smaller AI model learns by mimicking the outputs of a more advanced model.

  • Kratsios claims Moonshot built "a sophisticated internal platform to conduct large-scale distillation against U.S. models," which allowed the company "to quickly switch between multiple methods of access to avoid detection."

  • He also claimed the company obtained access to Nvidia GB300 AI chips, including servers located in Thailand, potentially bypassing U.S. export restrictions on advanced semiconductor technology.

  • Kratsios did not indicate what consequences the company may face, but Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the U.S. could impose sanctions on foreign companies found to have stolen American AI technology.

The release of Kimi K3 has been sounding alarms, with capabilities only slightly below Fable's. But some experts cast doubt on this being a product of distillation, since Fable has only been publicly available since July 1st. As Snorkel AI co-founder Braden Hancock put it: "You can't distill that much data, train a model, and release it in two weeks."

OPENAI

OpenAI Launches Presence for Enterprise AI Agents

OpenAI has introduced Presence, a new enterprise platform that helps organizations deploy, manage, and monitor AI agents across customer support and internal business operations.

Details:

  • Presence enables companies to build real-time voice and chat AI agents that can answer questions, access internal systems, perform approved actions, and escalate complex cases to human employees.

  • The platform includes built-in governance tools, allowing businesses to define permissions, policies, guardrails, evaluations, and approval workflows before agents are deployed.

  • OpenAI says Presence already powers its own English-language phone support system, resolving around 75% of incoming requests without human assistance, while companies including BBVA, SoftBank, and IAG are exploring the platform for customer service and enterprise operations.

  • While the platform's core AI agents run on OpenAI models, businesses can "connect third-party models and services through APIs for guardrails, tools, and other parts of their workflow."

It is currently available through a limited general availability program.

Ask Claude about the Anthropic Economic Index

  1. Open Claude and sign in to your account.

  2. Open the Connectors menu, search for "Anthropic Economic Index," and enable the connector.

  3. Open a new chat (it works in any conversation with any Claude model) and start asking questions such as:

  • Which occupations use AI the most?

  • What tasks are teachers using AI for?

  • “What does the Index say about my industry?”

  • What kinds of work are people automating with AI?

What do people use Claude for?

Anthropic notes that the Index reflects patterns in Claude usage rather than the labor market as a whole. Claude will point you back to the source data and its limitations as you explore.
