AI Creates New Viruses That Don’t Exist in Nature

Researchers trained an AI model on viral DNA and used it to design entirely new virus genomes. Sixteen of those designs successfully produced working viruses in the lab, opening new possibilities for medicine while also renewing concerns about AI's potential misuse.

Details:

• Researchers at the Arc Institute trained an AI model called Evo on genetic data and used it to generate new virus genomes that had never existed in nature.

• After testing 285 AI-designed genomes, scientists found that 16 successfully produced viable viruses capable of infecting bacteria

• The viruses were based on PhiX174, a bacteriophage that infects only E. coli, meaning they cannot infect humans and were chosen specifically to reduce safety risks.

• Tests showed a mixture of the new AI-generated viruses could overcome antibiotic resistance in some E. coli strains, something a comparable mixture of "naturally sourced" phages could not.

• Researchers believe the approach could help them find AI-generated viruses that could become useful tools for medicine and biotechnology.

While the researchers deliberately limited the AI to bacteria-infecting viruses, they warned that similar techniques could eventually be used to design more dangerous pathogens if proper safeguards aren't put in place. As AI becomes more capable in scientific research, this study is likely to intensify ongoing debates around AI safety and biosecurity.

Google Maps Adds AI Features for Food Orders, Hotel Bookings, and Trip Planning

Google has expanded the AI-powered Ask Maps feature with new agentic capabilities, allowing users to complete real-world tasks like ordering food, booking hotels, and planning trips directly from Google Maps.

Details:

• Ask Maps can now help users order food by finding restaurants that match specific requests, adding items to a cart, and connecting with supported services like Uber Eats, Toast, and Square to complete the purchase.

• The AI can also search for hotels, compare prices and availability, and recommend accommodations based on preferences such as location, budget, and nearby amenities before linking users to booking partners.

• Users can ask Ask Maps to find local events, including concerts and comedy shows, with links to purchase tickets directly.

• Google is also bringing Personal Intelligence to Ask Maps, allowing the assistant to personalize recommendations using information from Gmail and Google Calendar, such as upcoming flights, hotel reservations, and travel plans. The feature is disabled by default.

• Ask Maps now remembers previous conversations and introduces a new live transit widget with real-time updates on delays and transit conditions.

The new food ordering and booking features are rolling out to users in the U.S., while Personal Intelligence and the live transit widget are expanding to all regions where Ask Maps is available.

Create, edit, and get work done with Adobe for ChatGPT

1. Open ChatGPT and go to Plugins.

2. Search for and install the Adobe plugin.

3. Start a new chat and type @Adobe, or click the + button and select Adobe.

4. Describe what you want to create. It will automatically bring together the right Adobe tools behind the scenes to get you there.

The Adobe plugin in ChatGPT brings together tools from previously released Adobe apps for ChatGPT, along with additional tools and capabilities across Photoshop, Firefly, Premiere, Acrobat, Lightroom, Illustrator, InDesign, and more.

It can help you with a wide range of tasks, including image editing, presentations, PDFs, videos, and marketing assets.

A couple of examples:

• Turn long-form videos into eye-catching content for for YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and other social platforms.

• Easily create and edit designs: Pick from thousands of templates, tweak the copy and colors, then animate it for social or export it as a print-ready PDF.

You can also continue working in Adobe apps later if you need more advanced editing.

Note: The Adobe plugin is available globally on ChatGPT for web and mobile. Some features require signing in with an Adobe account, while others can be used as a guest.

OpenAI makes major upgrades for ChaptGPT

For Plus and Pro users, the company said it has updated GPT‑5.6 Sol, which will now be "more reliable with facts and provide more focused answers," and will also add a new slider that lets users choose how much thought ChatGPT puts into each response.

For Free users, the company announced it will shift the default model to GPT-5.6 Luna, as well as expand access with unlimited text chats and add a new Think button for higher reasoning.
