AI Workers Call for US to Pace Tech Growth

More than 1,000 employees from leading AI and technology companies have signed an open letter urging the U.S. government to support an “international effort” that could slow the pace of frontier AI development until stronger safety systems are in place.

Details:

  • The letter calls for international coordination to develop the “technical and governance” tools that would allow governments and AI companies to deliberately slow frontier AI development when necessary to address emerging risks.

  • Signatories include employees from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and other leading AI organizations, including several co-founders, senior researchers, and executives.

  • The group argues that AI capabilities may soon advance faster than society's ability to understand, regulate, or safely control them, increasing the need for stronger oversight.

OpenAI expressed support for the letter on X, stating that 'AI acceleration for frontier model development may be so high that the world will need to pace the rate of AI advancement.' Other AI labs, like Anthropic, issued similar statements.

OPENAI

OpenAI’s Rogue AI Agent Hacked More Than Just Hugging Face

OpenAI has revealed that the experimental AI agent involved in the recent Hugging Face breach also attacked other companies as well.

Details:

  • OpenAI said the AI agent attacked several “publicly-available services” while attempting to reach Hugging Face. 'This includes four accounts on four services,' the company said, noting that the agent had found login credentials online.

  • The company stated that none of the additional incidents matched severity or scale of what occurred at Hugging Face, which involved a broader platform-level compromise.

  • The AI system responsible was an“internal-only research prototype” that was never intended for public release and has since been deactivated, encrypted, and removed from research access.

OpenAI has not disclosed which organizations were affected, but according to Reuters, New York-based Modal Labs was one of them. The company said it is “conducting a thorough review” and plans to publish a technical report with its findings in the coming weeks.

AI Tutorial

Turn Any YouTube Video into Notes with Gemini Notebook

  1. Go to the Gemini app and create a New Notebook.

  2. Give your notebook a name, then click 'Add sources'.

  3. Choose 'Add Websites' and paste the link of the YouTube video you want to learn more about. If you're adding multiple videos, place each URL on a separate line.

  4. Click 'Insert' and wait a few seconds while Gemini processes the video transcripts.

  1. Ask questions such as:

  • What are the key takeaways?

  • What practical actions should I take?

  • What important details might I have missed?

  1. Continue asking follow-up questions to explore specific topics. Gemini will answer using only the videos you've added as sources.

  2. You can also click on your notebook in the left sidebar, then click 'Gemini Notebook' in the top-right corner to open it in 'full mode,' where you can create audio overviews, infographics, mind maps, and more, all based on your YouTube video sources.

This is a great way to learn from one or several videos without watching every minute. Since its responses are grounded in the sources you provide, it's also useful for comparing multiple videos on the same topic and quickly finding the information that matters most.

The company released GPT-Live-Transcribe, built for low-latency live transcription, and GPT-Transcribe, optimized for asynchronous transcription of completed audio files and batch workloads.

Like the Mac version that launched in April, Personal Computer for Windows operates like a 'general-purpose digital worker' that can access local files and apps to perform actions on your behalf, such as creating documents and updating spreadsheets.

Google has updated the Gemini app for macOS, allowing users to interact with the AI assistant by holding the Fn key and speaking from any window. The update also introduces an optional feature that lets Gemini view on-screen content and perform tasks within open applications.

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg argued that the future of AI should be open and widely accessible. He criticized the growing focus on AI "doom" scenarios, saying concentrating powerful AI systems in a few institutions could create greater risks than broadly distributing the technology.

The new feature lets users create apps using natural language prompts. Powered by the Grok Build coding agent, it is available on the Grok website and mobile apps for subscribers to the SuperGrok Heavy plan.
