Google Unveils Gemini 3.5, a Redesigned Gemini App, and More at I/O

Google used its I/O developer conference to introduce a major wave of AI updates, including new Gemini models, a cloud-based personal agent that runs continuously, and a complete redesign of the Gemini app.

Details:

  • Google introduced Gemini 3.5 Flash, a new model that CEO Sundar Pichai says outperforms Gemini 3.1 Pro on most benchmarks while running significantly faster and at lower cost.

  • The company says Gemini 3.5 was specifically designed for agentic workflows, with the ability to sustain long-running autonomous tasks, coding pipelines, and multi-step operations for hours at a time.

  • Google also unveiled Gemini Omni, a fully multimodal model capable of generating and editing video, images, and text from different types of input. Users can upload videos, replace characters, change styles, and iteratively refine generated content.

  • A new personal AI agent called Gemini Spark runs continuously in the cloud using dedicated virtual machines, allowing it to keep working even when a user’s laptop or phone is turned off.

  • Google announced a major redesign of the Gemini app, introducing a new “Neural Expressive” interface with fluid animations, visual summaries, embedded timelines, and inline Gemini Live interactions.

  • The company is also launching Antigravity 2.0, a developer platform for orchestrating multiple autonomous AI agents in parallel through desktop tools, APIs, SDKs, and command-line workflows.

Additional announcements included AI-generated shopping tools, expanded AI search capabilities, automated code vulnerability patching through Codemender, and broader rollout of Google’s SynthID watermarking system for AI-generated media.

Your prompts are leaving out 80% of what you're thinking.

When you type a prompt, you summarize. When you speak one, you explain. Wispr Flow captures your full reasoning — constraints, edge cases, examples, tone — and turns it into clean, structured text you paste into ChatGPT, Claude, or any AI tool. The difference shows up immediately. More context in, fewer follow-ups out.

89% of messages sent with zero edits. Used by teams at OpenAI, Vercel, and Clay. Try Wispr Flow free — works on Mac, Windows, and iPhone.

ANTHROPIC

OpenAI Co-Founder Andrej Karpathy Joins Anthropic

AI researcher and former OpenAI and Tesla leader Andrej Karpathy has joined Anthropic, where he will focus on advancing the large-scale training systems behind Claude.

Details:

  • Karpathy has started this week work on Anthropic’s pre-training efforts, which helps the company’s Claude models acquire their core knowledge and capabilities.

  • According to Anthropic, Karpathy will help build a new team focused on using Claude to accelerate pretraining research. This moves Anthropic closer to the widely sought goal of "recursive self-improvement," where AI can train its own successors with little to no human intervention.

  • Karpathy previously worked on deep learning and computer vision at OpenAI before leading Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving programs.

  • After leaving Tesla, he briefly returned to OpenAI before launching Eureka Labs, an education-focused startup exploring how AI assistants can support learning.

Anthropic also hired cybersecurity veteran Chris Rohlf for its frontier red team, which stress-tests advanced AI systems against major security threats.

How to Enable Codex Mobile Control on Windows

Codex mobile control is officially only available on macOS, but it turns out the feature already exists on Windows. It's just not enabled by default. Here's how to activate it:

  1. Open the Codex app on Windows and go to Settings.

  2. Under Configuration, click Open config.toml.

  3. Add these lines to the file, then save it:

[features]
remote_control = true

  1. Make the config.toml file read-only:

  • Open the file location in Windows (usually C:\Users\[your username]\.codex)

  • Right-click config.toml and select Properties

  • Check the Read-only box

  • Click Apply

  1. Restart Codex.

  2. Your phone should now be able to connect to Codex on Windows.

AI Findings/Resources

The latest in AI and Tech

The company and the government of Malta have announced a partnership that will give eligible citizens free access to ChatGPT Plus for one year after completing an AI literacy course.

The company introduced "Gmail Live," a new Gemini-powered feature that brings conversational AI to Gmail search. Instead of typing keywords, users can ask natural language questions about their emails, such as flight details, hotel bookings, school events, or appointment times.

The feature lets users quickly generate summaries of webpages under 5,000 words by simply shaking their phone.

The company has also expanded language support on iOS to German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese, while Android launches in English first with more languages planned later.

The company has acquired developer tools startup Stainless, whose software is widely used by rival AI companies like OpenAI, Google, Cloudflare, Runway, and Replicate.

The deal terms were not disclosed, though The Information previously reported the acquisition could be worth more than $300 million. Following the acquisition, Anthropic says it will shut down Stainless’s hosted products, including its SDK generator, meaning the tools will no longer be available to competitors.

Pope Leo XIV will present the Catholic Church’s first major AI-focused encyclical on May 25, addressing the impact of artificial intelligence on human dignity, warfare, and workers’ rights.

The document, titled “Magnifica Humanitas,” will reportedly focus on protecting people in the age of AI. Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic and a leading researcher in AI interpretability, has been invited as a guest speaker.
