OpenAI Is Slowing Down Training of Its Most Advanced AI Models

OpenAI has paused some of its most advanced AI training efforts as it introduces stricter safety measures, following concerns about how quickly its models are gaining new capabilities.

Details:

• OpenAI recently paused training on its next generation of models, codenamed Astra, for more than two weeks. Its largest planned frontier training run also remains on hold while new safety controls are implemented.

• The company says it is shifting significant researchers and computing resources toward alignment and monitoring, including systems designed to detect unauthorized access, data theft, and attempts by AI models to bypass safeguards.

• OpenAI says Astra could reach the “Critical” cybersecurity threshold under its Preparedness Framework. That classification requires additional protections while the model is still being trained, rather than waiting until before release.

• CEO Sam Altman said the slowdown was not triggered by a single incident, but by several research findings showing “various degrees of misalignment” as AI capabilities advanced faster than expected. He also argued that safety should take priority over maintaining the company’s development pace.

OpenAI has not given an estimate for how long the new safety measures will delay the release of Astra. They also stated they plan to revise its Preparedness Framework, though "don't have a date yet."

Firefox’s Smart Window adds AI-powered browsing features

Mozilla is expanding Firefox’s Smart Window with new AI features that can search the current web, reference previous browsing activity, and organize tabs while keeping the experience optional.

Details:

• AI chats in Smart Window can now use up-to-date web information and provide source links in chat responses, powered through a partnership with Exa.

• Smart Window can search your browsing history using natural language, making it possible to find pages based on what you remember rather than the exact website or title.

• The feature can also suggest groups of related tabs and identify duplicates, helping users organize an increasingly crowded browser.

• Search results from your history can include visual previews of pages you previously visited, so you can more easily recognize the site or content you were looking for.

• Mozilla says future updates will add features for surfacing recent browsing journeys and filling out online forms with AI.

Smart Window remains an opt-in beta, and Mozilla says it is taking an “agnostic” approach to AI, allowing users to turn individual AI features on or off rather than making them mandatory.

ChatGPT Can Now Search and Book Tables for You

OpenAI rolled out restaurant reservation search directly inside ChatGPT, using OpenTable, Resy, and Yelp.

Here's how it works:

1. Go to ChatGPT and sign in.

2. Describe what you're looking for:

"Can you recommend a steakhouse for a date night with reservations on Thursday in West Houston?"

You can add time, party size, cuisine, budget, and other preferences.

3. ChatGPT will search across the three platforms, show you what's open, and book it right there once you pick a time.
