Wikimedia Announces New AI Partnerships With Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft
The Wikimedia Foundation has revealed a wave of new AI partnerships as part of Wikipediaās 25th anniversary, expanding how its content is licensed and reused in the age of generative AI.
Details:
Wikipediaās parent organization disclosed new partnerships with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity, in addition to earlier and ongoing deals with companies like Google, Ecosia, and others.
These companies access Wikipedia and other Wikimedia project content through Wikimedia Enterprise, the foundationās commercial product designed for large-scale, high-speed data reuse.
The agreements provide a new revenue stream for Wikipedia as AI models increasingly rely on its content to deliver fast, factual answers.
Wikipedia remains one of the worldās most visited websites, serving over 65 million articles in more than 300 languages and drawing nearly 15 billion page views each month
These deals mark a major step in the non-profitās ability to monetize tech firmsā reliance on its content, after it has long been grappling with companies scraping large volumes of its freely available knowledge for AI training, which drove up server demand and costs for an organization funded mostly by small public donations.

MERGE LABS
OpenAI Invests in Sam Altmanās Brain-Computer Interface Startup Merge Labs

OpenAI has invested in Merge Labs, a brain-computer interface startup founded by CEO Sam Altman, deepening the companyās push into technologies that connect human biology directly with AI.
Details:
Merge Labs emerged from stealth with a $250 million seed round at an $850 million valuation, with OpenAI writing the largest single check, according to sources familiar with the deal.
The startup describes itself as a research lab focused on bridging biological and artificial intelligence to enhance human capabilities, with an emphasis on noninvasive brain-computer interfaces.
Merge Labs plans to develop new methods that connect to neurons using molecules instead of electrodes, potentially relying on modalities like ultrasound to send and receive signals.
As part of the deal, OpenAI will collaborate with Merge Labs on scientific foundation models and other frontier tools, aiming to accelerate research in neuroscience, bioengineering, and device design.
The investment puts OpenAI in closer competition with Neuralink, Elon Muskās braināimplant company that is developing surgically implanted brainācomputer interface chips designed to allow people, especially those with paralysis, to control computers and other devices directly with their thoughts.

Andrea Vallone, who led OpenAIās safety research on how chatbots should respond to signs of mental health distress, has left the company to join Anthropicās alignment team.
During her three years at OpenAI, Vallone built the "Model Policy" research group and worked on safety approaches tied to GPT-4, reasoning models, and GPT-5.
AI coding startup Replit has rolled out a new feature that lets users create and publish iOS mobile apps using only natural language prompts, pushing āvibe codingā further into consumer app development.
The Mobile Apps on Replit tool allows creators to go from idea to working app in minutes and submit to Appleās App Store within days, with built-in Stripe integration for monetization.
He praised Anthropic for having done āsomething special with coding,ā but also said that cutting xAI off was ānot good for their karma.ā
The 19-billion-parameter AI model generates up to 20 seconds of video with fully synchronized stereo audio from a single text prompt. The company says the model is faster than rivals and can reach 4K resolution at up to 50 frames per second, with benchmarks showing major speed gains over competing systems.
OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT Translate, a standalone web-based translation tool that supports more than 50 languages. In addition to basic text translation, the service lets users control the tone and style of translations with prompts like āmore fluent,ā āacademic,ā or ābusiness formal.ā
While its interface closely mirrors Google Translate, ChatGPT Translate currently focuses on text (with limited voice input on mobile) and lacks full image or document support, at least for now.
