GPT-4 Is the Dumbest Model You Will Ever Have to Use,' According to Sam Altman 🤯

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declared that GPT-4 is "by far the dumbest model any of you will ever ever have to use again.”

During a recent talk at Stanford University, Altman outlined his vision for the future of AI:

  • GPT-5 and beyond will be "a lot smarter" than their predecessors each year

  • OpenAI is sparing no expense to create advanced AI, even if it costs "50 billion a year." He claims making AGI will make it worth it.

  • Altman believes that intelligent agents will be the killer application for future AI systems. They will act as "super-competent colleagues" who know everything about a person's life and could be capable of executing specific tasks or proposing solutions to complex problems.

GPT-5 is expected to be released this year, possibly as early as mid-year. Rumors suggest that it will support video generation in addition to text and images. If OpenAI follows the DALL-E approach with its AI video generator, Sora, video generation could be integrated into ChatGPT.

Newly revealed emails show Microsoft's $1 billion investment in OpenAI in 2019 was fueled by deep concerns that the company was "years behind" Google in advancing AI capabilities. The emails detail discussions between Microsoft's leadership team:

  • In a June 2019 email, CTO Kevin Scott warned CEO Satya Nadella and co-founder Bill Gates that Microsoft was "multiple years behind the competition in terms of machine learning scale"

  • “As I dug in to try to understand where all of the capability gaps were between Google and us for model training, I got very, very worried,” Scott wrote.

  • Nadella forwarded Scott's "thoughts on OpenAI" to CFO Amy Hood, affirming "why I want to do this" investment

The emails were released as part of the ongoing US Justice Department antitrust case against Google.

Microsoft has invested over $13 billion into the partnership, integrating OpenAI's language models across its products. This has helped Microsoft position itself more as a leader in AI, instead of falling behind as it once feared five years ago.
