xAI Raises 20 Billion Dollars As Grok Faces Backlash Over AI Images
Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI has raised $20 billion in new funding, even as its chatbot Grok faces growing backlash for generating sexualized, nonconsensual images of women and minors.
Details:
xAI’s Series E round surpassed its $15B target, with investors including Nvidia, Fidelity, Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, and Valor Equity Partners.
xAI says it has around 600 million monthly active users across X and Grok, and plans to use the new funding to further expand its data centers and improve its Grok models.
The startup also disclosed that Grok 5 “is currently in training” and that it is preparing new consumer and enterprise products that “harness” the power of Grok, the Colossus supercomputer, and X.
The funding arrives amid growing regulatory pressure. Lawmakers and regulators in several countries have demanded explanations following reports that Grok generated sexualized deepfakes of real people, including children.
The company still appears to be struggling to prevent such content and has warned that anyone using Grok to create illegal material “will suffer the same consequences as if they had uploaded illegal content.”

Razer Unveils Project Ava, a Desk-Sized AI Hologram
The gaming company Razer showed off its 3D holographic technology, Project AVA, at CES 2025. It is a compact holographic avatar designed to sit on a user’s desk and interact visually in real time.
Details:
Project Ava is a 5.5-inch animated hologram displayed inside a small desktop capsule, with initial avatars including Kira, an anime-style character, and Zane, a muscular male avatar. Razer says more avatars will be added later.
The avatars feature facial expressions, eye tracking, lip sync, and animated body movement, and are designed to continuously observe both the user and their screen through a built-in webcam and optional access to the user’s computer camera.
Project Ava can answer questions, give live gaming tips, assist with brainstorming and problem solving, and react to on-screen content using computer vision.
In its current demo setup, Project Ava is powered by Grok, though Razer says the system is intended to be AI-model agnostic in the future, letting users choose which model drives the avatar.
Early demonstrations showed mixed performance, with limitations in accuracy, context awareness, and conversational flow, particularly during gameplay and storefront recognition.
Despite still being labeled a “Project,” Razer is taking $20 reservations and signaling that a consumer release could happen by the end of the year.

Universal Music Group is partnering with Nvidia to bring Music Flamingo, an AI model built for “human-like understanding” of music, into UMG’s massive catalog. The model analyzes elements like structure, harmony, emotion, and chord progressions to help artists and fans find and understand music beyond simple genres or playlists.
UMG says the collaboration focuses on “responsible AI,” aiming to support discovery, analysis, and human-led music creation rather than generating “AI slop.”
The new tool lets teachers use Gemini to generate podcast-style audio lessons designed to boost student engagement and comprehension. Educators can customize grade level, topics, learning goals, number of speakers, and conversational formats like interviews or discussions.
The feature is available to Google Workspace Education subscribers and taps into the growing popularity of podcasts among Gen Z students.
The company introduced a new lineup of AI-powered PC processors at CES 2026, led by the Ryzen AI 400 Series, aimed at everyday computing, content creation, and multitasking.
The company also revealed the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, a gaming-focused processor, alongside updates to its Redstone ray tracing technology.
The construction equipment giant is partnering with Nvidia to add AI and automation to its construction machinery, starting with an AI assistant called “Cat AI” in its Cat 306 CR Mini Excavator. Built on Nvidia’s Jetson Thor platform, the system uses AI agents to answer operator questions, provide safety tips, access manuals, and schedule service directly from the machine.
