AI REGULATION

White House Reportedly Asked OpenAI to Limit Initial Release of GPT-5.6

The White House has reportedly asked OpenAI to restrict the initial release of its upcoming GPT-5.6 model to a limited number of government-approved partners, citing concerns over the model's advanced capabilities.

Details:

  • The company had not initially planned to restrict the release but changed course following the White House's request, in consultation with the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Office of the National Cyber Director.

  • The administration views OpenAI's upcoming model as "on par" with Anthropic's latest models, which are currently under an export ban following concerns about their security guardrails.

  • According to The Information, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told employees in an internal memo that government officials are approving access to the model "customer by customer during this preview period," with a more general release expected "a couple of weeks later."

Despite agreeing to the limited rollout, the internal memo also notes that OpenAI has made it clear to the U.S. government that this is not their preferred "long term model," adding that they intend to work with the government and the broader AI industry to establish a "more sustainable approach for future releases."

TOGETHER WITH ENERGYX

Meet America’s Newest $1B Unicorn

A US startup just hit a $1 billion private valuation, joining billion-dollar private companies like SpaceX, OpenAI, and ByteDance. Unlike those other unicorns, you can invest in EnergyX.

Over 50,000 people already have. So have industry giants like General Motors and POSCO.

Why all the interest? EnergyX’s patented tech can recover up to 3X more lithium than traditional methods. That's a big deal, as demand for lithium is expected to 5X current production levels by 2040. Today, they’re moving toward commercial production, tapping into 100,000+ acres of lithium deposits in Chile, a potential $1.1B annual revenue opportunity at projected market prices.

Right now, you can invest at this pivotal growth stage for $13/share. But only through July 16. Become an early-stage EnergyX shareholder before the deadline.

Energy Exploration Technologies, Inc. (“EnergyX”) has engaged Beehiiv to publish this communication in connection with EnergyX’s ongoing Regulation A offering. ANTHROPIC

Anthropic Accuses Alibaba of Largest Claude Cloning Attempt Yet

Anthropic claims Alibaba carried out the biggest known effort to copy Claude's capabilities, accusing the Chinese tech giant of using thousands of fake accounts to extract millions of AI interactions.

Details:

  • Anthropic alleges that operators linked to Alibaba and its AI division Qwen generated more than 28.8 million conversations with Claude using nearly 25,000 fraudulent accounts between April and June.

  • The campaign targeted Claude's most advanced capabilities, including agentic reasoning, software engineering, and long-horizon task execution, while using proxy networks and other techniques to avoid detection.

  • Anthropic says the goal was to replicate Claude's capabilities without investing the time and cost required to train a frontier AI model from scratch, calling the practice a growing threat to U.S. AI leadership, as it could "help China reach Mythos Preview-level capabilities sooner."

The company is urging Congress to take stronger action, including allowing AI firms to share information about evolving Chinese tactics to deter future threats, tightening AI chip export controls, and introducing laws penalizing Chinese labs' "bad behavior" so that it becomes harder and more expensive for Chinese models to benefit from distillation attacks.
