Google Rolls Out Gemini 2.5 Flash Preview

Google is rolling out Gemini 2.5 Flash in preview today, with a new “thinking budget” that lets developers control how much reasoning occurs based on the prompt and use case.

Details:

  • The new model introduces reasoning capabilities that allow developers to “set thinking budgets to control cost vs. quality.”

  • Specifically, developers can control the number of tokens a model can generate while thinking — from 0 to 24,576 tokens — giving them the flexibility to pay for reasoning only when they need it most.

  • If no budget is set, the model automatically determines the thinking required by evaluating the complexity of the request.

  • Google says this version builds on Flash 2.0 with improved reasoning and strong results across key benchmarks like Humanity's Last Exam (HLE), GPQA Diamond, and AIME mathematics exams.

Gemini 2.5 Flash is available in preview for developers via Google AI Studio and Vertex AI, and it’s also coming to the Gemini app as an experimental option.

Seedream 3.0 Beats GPT-4o Image Generation, Says ByteDance

ByteDance has introduced Seedream 3.0, its latest text-to-image generation model, which reportedly surpasses models like GPT-4o, Midjourney v6.1, and Imagen 3 in several key areas, including image quality, speed, and text rendering accuracy.

Details:

  • In benchmarks like the Artificial Analysis Arena, where users compare outputs from different models, the model initially ranked first at the time of its paper’s release. It now sits just one point behind GPT-4o.

  • It performs especially well on text-heavy prompts, achieving a text rendering rate of 94 percent in both English and Chinese, even with dense typography.

  • It is also able to produce more realistic skin textures and finer details in photorealistic portraits, avoiding the overly smooth appearance typical of many AI-generated portraits.

  • Alongside Seedream 3.0, ByteDance has introduced SeedEdit, a companion tool that enables both image and text editing within generated visuals, it supposedly performs better than GPT-4o and Gemini 2.0 Flash in making precise edits without compromising the overall identity of the image.

The Seedream 3.0 paper features numerous visual comparisons with other models' outputs, lending support to ByteDance’s claims — at the very least, the model appears competitive at the highest level.

The feature allows you to ask Gemini about anything on your screen or directly in front of you, and you no longer need a Google One AI Premium plan to access it.

OpenAI has released Flex processing, an API option that offers reduced AI-powered model usage prices in exchange for "occasional resource unavailability."

Google is giving students free access to Google’s One AI Premium Plan just in time for finals, providing access to its most advanced AI features, such as Gemini in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, NotebookLM Plus, and Whisk.

Reports suggest U.S. President Donald Trump is considering blocking DeepSeek from buying U.S. technology to power its systems, particularly Nvidia chips, and even banning U.S. citizens from using the Chinese AI-powered chatbot.
