Tesla Considers Massive AI Chip Factory and a Lifeline for Intel

Elon Musk announced plans for a "gigantic chip fab." Musk is exploring an unprecedented level of vertical integration, suggesting the company may need to construct a factory far larger than a Gigafactory—a "terafab." Crucially, he also publicly floated the idea of a potential partnership with U.S. chipmaker Intel to help realize this massive manufacturing project.

Details:

• To secure the necessary volume of AI chips, Musk stated that Tesla may need to build a "Tesla terafab," which he described as "like giga but way bigger."The facility's output would be massive, targeting a production capacity of at least 100,000 wafer starts per month.

• Musk mentioned a potential collaboration with Intel, stating that it's "probably worth having discussions." While no deal has been signed, the comments boosted Intel's shares, as the struggling chipmaker seeks external customers for its newest manufacturing technology.

• Musk noted that even when extrapolating the best-case production scenario from current suppliers like TSMC and Samsung, the volume of chips is "still not enough" for Tesla's AI roadmap.

• New Chip Specifications:

  ·        Tesla is currently designing its fifth-generation (AI5) chip.

  ·        The chip is designed to be highly power-efficient, consuming about a third of the power of Nvidia's flagship Blackwell chip.

  ·        It is also projected to be extremely cost-effective, with a manufacturing cost of approximately 10% of Blackwell's.

A small production of the AI5 chip is expected in 2026, with high-volume production scheduled for 2027. The subsequent AI6 chip, designed to double the performance, is slated for volume production in mid-2028.

Australian startup Lumonus has secured A$25 million in Series B funding to expand its AI-driven cancer treatment workflow globally, enhancing precision care across the U.S., Australia, and Europe, marking a significant step toward smarter, faster healthcare innovation.

• Lumonus raised A$25 million (Australian Dollars) in its Series B round.

  The funding round was led by Aviron Investment Management, with continued support from Oncology Ventures.

• The Lumonus AI platform has already helped clinicians consult on and prescribe over 280,000 cancer treatments, automating the creation of more than 75,000 treatment plans and improving the efficiency and consistency of care.

• The new capital will be used to expand the U.S. go-to-market and clinical success teams, further advance flagship products (Lumonus AI Physician and Lumonus AI Dosimetry), and invest in clinical informatics to harness real-world evidence for personalized care.

The company aims to reimagine oncology workflows by bridging the gap between scientific innovation in cancer treatment and the systems that support care delivery.
