DEEPSEEK

DeepSeek Challenges OpenAI's DALL-E with Its New Janus-Pro AI Model

On Monday, DeepSeek released Janus-Pro, a new family of image generation models that reportedly outperforms leading models, while also being free and open source.

Details:

  • DeepSeek has made the Janus-Pro model family accessible to all, mirroring its earlier strategy with DeepSeek-R1. The models are available for download from the AI dev platform Hugging Face.

  • The models range in size from 1 billion to 7 billion parameters and can generate and analyze images better than existing models such as OpenAI's DALL-E and Stable Diffusion.

  • They focus on efficiency. Unlike some of the largest and most resource-intensive AI models, Janus Pro 7B, with its 7 billion parameters, is designed to deliver high-level performance without demanding vast computational resources.

The company released its Janus Pro models today as U.S. AI stocks plunged—a timing that appears deliberate, seemingly designed to highlight the Beijing-based firm’s challenge to Silicon Valley.

META

Meta AI Rolls Out Memory Feature

Meta is expanding its AI chatbot’s ability to “remember” details about users to provide a more personalized experience.

Details:

  • Starting this week, the feature will be available across Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp in the US and Canada.

  • Meta AI can remember details like your dietary preferences or interests, adjusting future recommendations based on past conversations and account details.

  • The chatbot will use information from Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, including your activity, age, and location, to suggest things like recipes, events, or activities.

  • Meta says its AI will only remember things from one-on-one conversations, not group chats, and gives users the option to delete its memories at any time. However, the company does not offer an opt-out for these features “at this time.”

Meta’s memory feature follows similar moves from ChatGPT and Google Gemini, signaling a growing trend in AI-driven personalization.

How to switch off Apple Intelligence on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac

On Monday, Apple released a software update for iPhones, iPads, and Macs that turns on Apple Intelligence by default for users with supported devices.

In case you don’t want the generative AI features enabled on your device for any reason, here’s how to turn them off:

  1. On Mac: Go to System Settings, select Apple Intelligence, and turn it off using the toggle. You may also want to disable Siri here.

  2. On iOS: Open Settings, scroll down to Apple Intelligence & Siri, and turn off the toggle. You can also disable Siri, which some people do for privacy and security reasons, especially the "Allow Siri When Locked" option.

👉 A look at other Chinese AI models

The latest in AI and Tech

Nvidia’s stock dropped 17% in a single day, wiping nearly $600 billion off its market cap—“the biggest drop ever for a U.S. company,” according to CNBC. The selloff was triggered by Chinese AI startup DeepSeek’s surprise success.

Lucie, a French government-backed AI chatbot, was taken offline after giving absurd responses like suggesting people eat "cow’s eggs" and failing basic math. Developers admitted it was released too early, calling it a research project in progress.

The new model comes with new features like Advanced Motion Control and Realistic Physics Simulation.

Existing users remain unaffected as the company investigates, following a weekend surge of 2.6 million app downloads.
