ChatGPT's Lead Wobbles as Google's Gemini Gains Ground

Once the trailblazer that reshaped how we use AI chatbots, ChatGPT now faces a serious challenge. Usage growth has stalled, while rivals like Gemini rapidly close the gap, prompting industry watchers to ask whether ChatGPT's dominance may finally be slipping.
Details:
ChatGPT's global monthly active users, though still over 800 million, grew by only about 5% from July to November 2025, indicating a plateau in new user acquisition.
In stark contrast, Google's Gemini AI app grew by 30% during the same period, suggesting it is capturing a rapidly increasing market share.
Google's latest model, Gemini 3, has displaced OpenAI as the top performer on key "intelligence index" and technical benchmarks, which had been a point of pride and a key selling point for OpenAI for the past three years.
This competitive pressure led OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to declare an internal "code red," signaling a shift in priorities to focus company resources entirely on improving ChatGPT's core speed, reliability, and personalization.
OpenAI, despite generating billions in revenue, is not profitable and is burning large sums on research and computing costs. Analysts warn that if the "AI boom" proves to be a speculative bubble, the company, lacking its own profitable search business, could struggle to raise the massive funding needed to stay competitive with giants like Alphabet (Google's parent company).
Some analysts, such as Ross Hendricks of Porter & Co., suggest that without a decisive monetization or differentiation strategy, ChatGPT risks becoming an "early winner" that ultimately loses to larger rivals, as MySpace did to Facebook.

OpenAI Turns Off "App Suggestions" Feature After Criticism

After backlash from subscribers who saw in-chat prompts as intrusive advertising, OpenAI has paused the controversial feature, acknowledging it "fell short" and promising a better user experience. The move reflects growing sensitivity around AI monetization and user trust.
Details:
OpenAI turned off the recently introduced suggestion tiles after users reported seeing promos for companies like Peloton and Target.
The company insists the suggestions were part of an "app discovery" test tied to its new ChatGPT-app platform, with no financial arrangements behind them.
Chief Research Officer Mark Chen acknowledged that the rollout "fell short," and committed to improving how such features are presented.
Users said the suggestion tiles blended into the normal UI, making it unclear they weren't regular AI responses, effectively resembling ads.
This underscores the risks AI platforms face when navigating monetization: even non-paid suggestions can erode user confidence if not clearly labeled or opt-in.

Today? Goldman Sachs sounds crazy forecasting 3% returns for 2024 to 2034.
But we’re currently seeing the highest price for the S&P 500 compared to earnings since the dot-com boom.
