Google DeepMind Opens Project Genie to U.S. Gemini Subscribers

Google DeepMind has made its experimental Project Genie world-generation system publicly available to Gemini subscribers in the U.S., giving users access to real-time, interactive AI-generated environments.

Details:

  • The experimental prototype, based on the Genie 3 world model shown last August, is now available to Google AI Ultra subscribers ($249.99/month) in the U.S. who are 18 or older.

  • The prototype includes three core capabilities: World Sketching for creating worlds with Nano Banana Pro and Gemini, World Exploration for moving through them, and World Remixing for changing existing worlds.

  • Google notes several current limitations, including inconsistent realism, slow character responses, and session time limits capped at 60 seconds.

  • Some Genie 3 capabilities announced in August, such as promptable events that change the world as you explore it, are not yet available. Google says additional features will roll out in future updates.

The company plans to expand access beyond the U.S. and to additional tiers eventually.

Google Maps Adds Hands-Free Gemini for Walking and Cycling

Google is expanding Gemini’s presence in Maps, allowing users to access the AI assistant hands-free while walking or cycling, just months after rolling out its hands-free, conversational driving experience.

Details:

  • Maps users can now ask Gemini questions while navigating on foot, such as learning more about the neighborhood, finding attractions, or locating nearby cafes along their route.

  • Cyclists can also use Gemini without stopping, asking for ETAs, schedule details, or sending messages like notifying a contact about a delay while staying focused on the road.

  • The experience supports follow-up questions, enabling multi-step conversations to refine recommendations based on distance, budget, or preferences.

  • Google says the update is designed to reduce friction when walking or cycling, eliminating the need to type or leave the navigation screen.

  • The feature is available worldwide on iOS wherever Gemini is supported and is currently rolling out on Android.

The update builds on recent Maps enhancements, including Gemini-powered “know before you go” tips, an improved Explore tab for discovering nearby spots, and EV charger availability predictions.

Neuralink said it now has 21 people enrolled in human trials worldwide, up from 12 participants reported last September, marking two years since testing officially began.

The brain implant is aimed at helping people with conditions such as spinal cord injuries, control computers and robotic arms with their thoughts.

The company is also preparing for its first human clinical trials of the Blindsight implant, a device designed to restore vision for those with complete blindness.

Google is reportedly working on a feature that would allow users to clone their own voice through AI Studio.

The hidden option called “Create Your Voice” appears when selecting the “Flash Native Audio Preview” model, currently linked to Gemini 2.5 Flash.

China has approved ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent to import more than 400,000 Nvidia H200 AI chips combined. The approval came during Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s recent visit to China, though additional companies remain on a waiting list and final conditions attached to the licenses are still being negotiated.

The startup is reportedly charging about $60 per 1,000 impressions for its first ChatGPT ads, putting prices closer to premium TV placements like NFL games than typical online ads, which usually cost just a few dollars.

The renowned filmmaker behind films like “Requiem for a Dream” and “Black Swan” partnered through his AI studio, Primordial Soup, with Salesforce, TIME Studios, and Google DeepMind to produce a largely AI-generated drama series about the American Revolution titled “On This Day… 1776.”

The series is available on TIME Magazine’s YouTube channel, with new episodes released weekly through the end of the year.
