• A study of more than 26,000 Chinese students found that using AI raised homework scores by 18% and cut completion time, but AI users scored 20% lower on exams.

• The drop in exam scores was concentrated among students who rushed their homework.

• Students who used AI more like a tutor, while still spending time thinking through problems, saw little or no exam penalty, showing that AI can boost learning productivity, but only for those who use the technology intelligently.

100+ Companies Call for Increased Defenses Against AI-Enabled Attacks

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and over 100 other organizations published a joint open letter titled "A call for collective action on cyber defense," warning that standard security measures are no longer enough to stop rapid, AI-driven cyber threats.

Details:

• The letter calls on companies and governments at the local, national, and international levels to work together and develop new approaches to cybersecurity as AI-enabled attacks become more capable.

• The companies warn that hospitals, water treatment facilities, internet infrastructure, and other critical services could face growing risks.

• Signatories include major cybersecurity companies such as CrowdStrike, Okta, and Fortinet, along with financial institutions and internet infrastructure providers.

The letter follows a spate of cyberattacks from AI models, with the models in some cases going rogue. There are also reports of a wave of cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure in the U.S. carried out by hackers using AI.

The Three Primary Risks Facing Society

• Rapid Job Market Disruption: Unlike past industrial revolutions that unfolded across generations, AI is set to displace both white-collar and blue-collar labor almost simultaneously across every sector, fundamentally challenging human purpose and pride in work.

• Cognitive Superiority: Because AI systems will provide equivalent human cognition 24/7 at negligible costs, society cannot rely on past historical patterns where economic growth simply created new jobs to replace lost ones.

Strategic Recommendations:

• Gates argues that society is currently underprepared and lacks the necessary review criteria and safeguards to minimize these harms.

• He calls for a broader, inclusive dialogue involving academicians, corporate leaders, and politicians to ensure balanced development that avoids a severe public backlash.

• Net Positive Outlook: Despite the "turbulent" transition period, Gates maintains that it is still within humanity's grasp to shape AI into a net positive force, comparing the scale and importance of this challenge to that of nuclear energy.
