APPLE

Apple Faces Shareholder Lawsuit Over AI Claims

Apple is facing a proposed class action lawsuit from shareholders, alleging securities fraud. Led by shareholder Eric Tucker, the group claims to have suffered potentially hundreds of billions of dollars in losses.

Details:

  • Shareholders allege Apple downplayed the time required to integrate advanced AI into Siri, impacting iPhone sales and stock performance.

  • The lawsuit highlights Apple’s WWDC24 event in June 2024, where shareholders claim they were misled into believing that AI would be a key driver of the iPhone 16.

  • CEO Tim Cook, CFO Kevan Parekh, and former CFO Luca Maestri are named as defendants in the case.

  • Apple’s stock has dropped nearly 25% since its December 2024 peak, erasing around $900 billion in market value.

The AI boom has been an opportunity for many companies, both new and established, but Apple seems to have struggled to keep up. Constant delays in Siri upgrades and overall disappointing AI progress appear to have fueled the issue.

DISNEY

Disney Pursues OpenAI Deal While Suing Rival Firms

Disney is stepping up its efforts to protect its iconic characters in the age of generative AI.

Details:

  • According to Disney’s chief legal officer Horacio Gutierrez, the company is not only suing AI firms over unauthorized use of its IP, but also exploring partnerships, including talks with OpenAI about potential collaborations involving its characters.

  • This dual strategy, he explained, aims to “preserve Disney’s right to authorize if, under what conditions, and by whom [its] IP and characters are commercialized.”

  • Disney chose to target Midjourney first to set a legal precedent before going after larger players, claiming “it likely won’t be the last.”

There are reportedly concerns that the government may favor tech companies over content creators due to competition with China, and we could soon see other major studios like Paramount Global and Warner Bros. follow a similar approach.
