The Darwin Gödel Machine: World's First Self-Improving Coding AI Agent

Sakana AI has unveiled the Darwin-Gödel Machine (DGM), an AI coding agent capable of self-improvement through self-modification and open-ended exploration.
Details:
The AI agent rewrites its own Python code to generate new versions of itself—each with different tools, workflows, or strategies—which are then evaluated in multiple stages using benchmarks like SWE-bench and Polyglot that test agents on real-world programming tasks.
The best-performing agents are archived and used as the foundation for future iterations.
With this approach, which takes inspiration from Darwinian evolution, DGM's performance on SWE-bench increased from 20 to 50 percent, and on the multilingual Polyglot benchmark, it improved from 14.2 to 30.7 percent."
The researchers acknowledge that letting agents rewrite their own code introduces new risks, which is why DGM uses sandboxing, strict modification limits, and full traceability for every change.
While the results of this approach are promising, its usability is currently very limited due to the high costs of implementation. Over time, however, Sakana AI hopes DGM could serve as a blueprint for more general, self-improving AI.

AI RESEARCH
AI Shows Higher Emotional IQ than Humans

A recent study by researchers at the University of Geneva and the University of Bern tested six generative AIs using emotional intelligence (EI) assessments typically designed for humans and found that not only do they perform well, but they can also outperform humans.
Details:
The models chosen for the study were ChatGPT-4, ChatGPT-o1, Gemini 1.5 Flash, Copilot 365, Claude 3.5 Haiku, and DeepSeek V3.
In tests involving emotionally charged scenarios, these AI systems achieved an average score of 82%, significantly higher than the 56% scored by human participants.
Beyond selecting appropriate emotional responses, they also demonstrated the ability to generate new EI tests that “proved to be as reliable, clear and realistic as the original tests, which had taken years to develop.”
These findings suggest that AI could play a role in emotionally sensitive domains like education, coaching, and conflict resolution, when supervised appropriately.

How to create AI videos with Sora for FREE

Microsoft just released a new update to its Bing app, introducing Bing Video Creator, which now allows users to leverage OpenAI’s Sora to create AI videos from text prompts—for free.
Go to the Play Store or App Store and download the official Microsoft Bing app.
Tap the tab at the bottom right and select "Video Creator."

Type a description of the video you want to create in the prompt field.
Once it's created, you can either tap the video to enlarge it or tap the three dots at the bottom right to download it.
Notes:
This feature is currently available only on iOS and Android and will be available on the web shortly.
Users can create up to 10 fast video generations and unlimited slower ones.
Videos are 5 seconds long in a 9:16 format, with 16:9 support also on the way.

The latest in AI and Tech
The company announced that it is rolling out a slate of multimedia features, including AvatarFX, their new AI video-generation model teased back in April.
This new version enhances natural, human-like interactions by incorporating advanced turn-taking capabilities that allow AI agents to understand when to pause, speak, and take turns in conversation.
Additionally, it features multilingual support and includes a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system, enabling AI agents to access external knowledge bases for more accurate and context-aware responses.
Andreessen Horowitz is leading a $300 million funding round in Abridge AI, a health tech company leveraging generative AI to automate medical transcription, in a deal that values the business at $5.3 billion, nearly doubling the company’s last valuation.
The deal would include integrating Perplexity AI's technology into Samsung’s smartphones, potentially replacing Google's Gemini assistant, as well as Samsung’s Internet browser.
A new version of X’s direct messaging (DM) feature, XChat, is rolling out to select users, offering features like vanishing messages, encryption, and the ability to share files, alongside its audio and video calling support.
The X team expects to bring XChat to all users sometime this week, unless they encounter scaling issues during the rollout.
That’s a wrap!
