AI IN HEALTHCARE

How AI is Shaping the Future of Stroke Treatment in the UK

England’s NHS says a new AI, which can quickly analyze brain scans to diagnose the type and severity of a stroke, has boosted patients’ chances of full recovery since its nationwide rollout.

Details:

  • The AI technology ā€œhelps doctors make faster decisions about the right course of treatmentā€ and has been introduced at all 107 stroke centers in England, aiding thousands of patients.

  • It can cut the time from hospital admission to life-saving treatment by up to 60 minutes, a crucial improvement given that patients are estimated to lose around two million brain cells per minute at the onset of a stroke, making rapid diagnosis and treatment essential.

  • As a result, it has tripled the likelihood of recovery without disability, from 16% to 48%.

This is very significant, as with around 38,000 stroke-related deaths each year, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the UK. The government hopes to bring more "trusted AI tools safely into clinics" soon.

OPENAI

OpenAI is Adding Parental Controls to ChatGPT

The company wrote in a blog post today what its new ā€œparental controlsā€ will look like after a lawsuit that linked the chatbot to a teen suicide recently. These will be applied within ā€œthe next monthā€:

Details:

  • Parents will be able to link their account with a teen’s via an email invite.

  • Chat history and memory can be disabled for the teen’s account.

  • Notifications will be sent when ChatGPT flags the teen as being ā€œin a moment of acute distress.ā€

  • Parents can control ā€œhow ChatGPT responds to their teen with age-appropriate model behavior rules, which are on by default.ā€

  • Additionally, the company will have sensitive conversations routed to reasoning models like GPT-5, ā€œso it can provide more helpful and beneficial responses, regardless of which model a person first selected.ā€

These are part of broader changes the company is making to address mental health issues that could arise from use of the chatbot. Just last week, it also announced new mental health guardrails, as more cases are emerging of vulnerable individuals committing harmful acts after the AI allegedly encouraged harmful thoughts.
